Did anyone hire packers and movers? If so, how much did they charge?

We're thinking we'd be better off hiring someone to pack our house when we move (kids, pets, loads of work on, etc).

But no idea if it'll be too expensive.

Did anyone do it? Was it worth it? And I'd love to know how much it cost?!

The move isn't far, just a couple of miles, but london.

Wow I'm amazed by how cheap this is. I've always done my own packing, as I'd assumed it would be ridiculously expensive. Mind you, last time we moved 3 streets over it cost us bloody £600 for a small 3 bed, just for the removal, so maybe I just live in an expensive area for that sort of thing.

Just over £1k about 4 years ago. Best money we ever, ever spent.

Think ours was about £800 ish 5 years ago. 4 bed house moving 100 miles or so. Paid for dismantling, packing, unpacking and putting everything together again and they were like swarm of ants-was amazing!! Would always do if can afford to.

We went from a 3 bed to a 4 bed in the south of England 2 years ago. We paid just over £1000. It was well worth the money - our moving team were amazing! I have recommended them tons of times since we moved and would deffo spend that money again for a hassle free move.

The packing is the cheapest part (amazingly so in the grand scheme of things).

Top tips though.

Before they come throw out everything you don't want to go with you so there is less to pack.

Throw out your bin rubbish or it comes too!

Put everything you may need in the day (eg. your handbag, your glasses (specs)) and important documents such as passports etc in your car as anythibg left out will get packed!

I made stickers for them top use on the boxes.

Label the boxes for the rooms at the new house (rather than where they came from) and do a floor plan of the new house and tick it to the front door at the new house so they know where to put stuff.

Do some lists of what is in cupboards and as they pack them ask them to stick the list to the box too.

Keep your kettle and tea making stuff separate.

Keep your hoover and a cleaning kit separate to whizz round after they have packed.

I paid about 900, total moving was about 2800. It was worth every single penny.

Just wanted to update and say thank you so much! I did go ahead and book it. It's going to cost me £800 total for a very local move (minimal furniture, we're selling a lot and going to buy new that fits better in our new place).

Taking pps advice beforehand - like chucking and sorting before they come. (The story about the carefully wrapped dirty nappy! 😂😬)

This thread has persuaded me! Just looking around at all my stuff I know I don't want to do the packing!

(Secretly dream of unpackers too, but then i'd probably never be able to find anything!)

£400 extra. Total cost £1400

Good move. It makes all the difference to the move, I found. We moved in last time and didn't feel absolutely exhaused and frazzled, which meant we had energy to unpack far more than we would otherwise had done. Of course 4 years down the line we still have a shed load of unpacked boxes...
