Morning

We are buying new large appliances for our new build.

Would love to hear positive and negative thoughts on the medium priced appliance brands for:

  • Oven/combination oven microwave
-fridge freezer - ideally American style
  • dishwasher
  • induction hob
-washer -dryer

Any thoughts very much appreciated

We had a Hoover washing machine which lasted 12 years (including baby - teenage years). Replaced it with a Bosch (Which best buy) which died a month out of warranty.
Repairer said Bosch used same cheap plastic parts as cheap brands and recommended getting a good basic brand or JL, use it to death and expect to replace it in a few years. We bought John Lewis and its still going strong after many years.

Miele dishwasher I love and would buy again - its Bosch and Hotpoint predecessors lasted two years each.

Have had various fridge freezers, all been ok. Current one is aging and would like a big Samsung but put off by their terrible customer service when something does go wrong.

Creda tumble drier - currently 25+ yrs and still going strong, its a bit noisy but I can't bring myself to chuck out a functioning device.

Microwaves are my biggest bug bear. We had a Panasonic which lasted nearly 20 years. Replaced it with new but recommended Panasonic, which had notably cheaper build quality, only for the door to crack within a few months. Replacement also cracked in the same place. Tried a Samsung instead had the same problem. I can only assume microwave oven build is a lot cheaper than it used to be or the ghost of the dead microwaves haunts our kitchen.

Kitchen rather overdue for redoing, I wouldn't buy all one brand - experience is too mixed for that (and I prefer non built in).

Just put all Neff appliances in our new kitchen and they are fantastic IMO. Ovens are really quiet and so easy to use. DH loves the hob and the dishwasher is the best we've had over 35 years. Have AEG washing machine and dryer bought to replace hotpoint and they are excellent. We bought all the kitchen appliances from the kitchen supplier and they were cheaper than buying on the net.

Ours are Samsung, a year old, and we love them.

Oops, dishwasher is a Kenmore, and 6 years old. It leaked underneath silently until one day it went through the floor to the room below, we had to have all our hardwood flooring replaced. The part was replaced and no more problems.

We had issues with a Samsung US style fridge freezer (ice forming around motor) which was fixed under warranty, but I'd be reluctant to invest in another one.

Siemens washing machine was very good, still going strong after 8 yrs of daily use, and Neff fan oven OK, but never seemed to cook very evenly.

Our new kitchen and Siemens appliances are nearly 5 yrs old, the dishwasher broke after 3 (cost £250 to mend) and the oven stopped working after 4 years, cost £100 to mend.

Recommended Neff for ovens, Bosch for washers. Panasonic for microwave. Avoid Hotpoint in general.

Agree with Samsung being good quality, but customer service being absolute shite. I'd not buy Samsung again because of this.

Don't buy any extended warranties on anything, they're a total waste of money. The cost of them can total buying a whole new machine.

I have, and would highly recommend, a:

Gaggenau oven
Gaggenau microwave
Gaggenau steam oven
Subzero fridge
Miele dishwasher

ShabbieCheek · 19/02/2017 21:49

Miele for washer and dryer every time- totally worth the additional expense

AveEldon · 19/02/2017 21:59

Happy with Bosch washer, dryer, fridge, fridge freezer

Smeg washer dryer was dreadful
Smeg oven has not stood the test of time

My parents always buy Whirlpool or Hotpoint - they are crap, just don't go there

camelfinger · 19/02/2017 22:08

Our washing machine is about a £400 Bosch one from 2008. I use it frequently, never bother with Calgon and hardly ever clean it and it's pretty good. Dishwasher is Neff which has needed a £150 repair just out of warranty. Oven and job are random Ikea ones (perhaps Whirlpool) and have been good.

pineapplecrazylady · 21/02/2017 10:14

Kitchen was "done" 10+ years ago (am on this now as we're getting an extension and need to replace). Everything Bosch ( hob, double oven, fridge and dishwasher) and all going stong. Am going to keep fridge and dishwasher....

Beko fridge freezer 8 years and working well. Hoover washing machine 5 years but left at old house so no idea if it's still going. Washed very well though. Just got rid of a Beko dishwasher after second fix for same issue within first year. Independent engineer sent by Beko said he fixes the same Beko fault all the time. He recommended Bosch so that's what we've just replaced it with.
