Kitchen: Where to buy one?

StripeyTowels · 29/01/2017 13:11

I just need a reasonable quality, reasonably hard wearing, reasonably priced kitchen. It shouldn't be this hard! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've read all the threads, looked at all the links, visited a million show rooms and I'm totally confused.

Yesterday I thought I'd order it from DIY kitchens, but I can't find any corner units (floor standing) on their website (I think there was maybe one curved one, but I don't like it) am I looking in the wrong place?

I like the look of Wren kitchens, but after all of the terrible stories I'm staying away from them.

I can't justify the cost of the upper end kitchens (I'm not sure if I'm staying here, renting it out or selling it - it depends on my job, but I can't wait any longer to do the kitchen).

I don't think B&Q or Homebase offer very good quality for money.

I'm on my own so will be getting a fitter/joiner to install it so I don't think Ikea is the best option, especially given the walls & floor are all concrete and the pipes need to run behind the units.

I'm looking at Benchmarx (direct, not via Wicks) & am open to other suggestions.

Plus any hints on how not to be resentful of spending a chunk of money on a new kitchen that's still not going to be what you want, because it's to damn small! - would be appreciated!

Thanks everyone 💐

Helena a split oven is on the 'maybe' list. I've been put off a bit by friends saying the main oven isn't big enough. Plus, I like the Neff 'Hide & Slide' 😬

I do like Ikea stuff, we had lots of bookcases etc in the old house.

Emma. If I decide that I think DIY kitchens is the way to go, I'll go up to their showroom in Yorkshire for a weekend, to check them out first. I'm far too bloody fussy to order it online (I wish I wasn't though!).

Where did you get your worktops from & his happy are you with them?

I wouldn't gave too many regrets re not using a Wicks fitter, I've heard plenty of nightmare stories about them. I'm dreading choosing tradesmen again, it was a nightmare for the bathroom & I'd only use the plasterer again.

Wicks are mainly supplied by Benchmarx and I'm look at those directly.

KoolKoala. I'm pleased you had good service, it seems incredibly rare, which is a shame because I do like their kitchens.

YorkshireTea. Fuckityfuck fuck fuck - I hadn't looked at that. The limited cabinet sizes in the UK is driving me batshit. Oh well, it'll pretty badly have to be two units then. I'll live. Maybe.

wowfudge. I did consider moving the oven (& hob) to the other wall, but I don't really want to be scrunched up next to the fridge' when cooking & there wouldn't be any space to the right of the hob at all, but I'll have another look at it.

The bit of wall above the window is too small, it's only about 20cm (high).

There really isn't room for a butchers block, unless I put it against the wall I'm trying to keep clear (the walkway between the two doors).

Barbara. I wish I still had that much space and a utility room. Separation & down sizing sucks. Big time this kitchen is just too bloody small.

I think the variance between consultants is much the same everywhere - it's so frustrating.

I'm glad you love your kitchen, it sounds nice.

minijoeyjojo. It sounds like DIY are really good, I haven't heard many say otherwise. If you replaced your kitchen would you use them?

Miaow. We chatted a lot on your threads 😁 (I've namechanged for this thread in case I end up posting photos).

I'm glad you love your kitchen now. Which Wicks one is it? It looks really good.

Your kitchen is a lot longer than mine. Would you mind posting a couple of photos of what yours is like at each end? I don't mind the bin being out too much, but I hate it being the first thing anyone sees when they come in (it's technically the back door, but it's the door everyone uses.). I know it's going to drive me batshit only being half the size of the current bin. The outside bins all have to live at the end of an alley way, so it's not just a matter of popping itbeasily in the outside bin 😏

What have you used on the floor?

Ikea are great and thousands less than comparable. They will plan and fit for you.

NotMeNoNo · 30/01/2017 14:13

OK it sounds like you've done lots of thinking!
I think your layout looks pretty good in terms of sink /hob/fridge. You will have to rely on wall units quite a bit - could you have extra tall ones and a little folding step on a peg somewhere if you need the height?

In terms of corners maybe a Magic corner in a 500 unit next to the sink, and a 90x90 next to the hob. It is not a standard but I have my 90x90 corner with offset shelves not a carousel which is very accessible and takes a lot of odd shaped items. This is an easy mod for the fitter to do - they need to get a couple of extra shelves and trim to about 350mm deep. Then you can have one 400 drawer stack next to the fridge and one 300 (or bespoke) unit with pull-outs to fill the gap on the long side. If you have pullout under the sink, it could have a couple of bins plus cleaning/laundry.

DIY Kitchens will make bespoke size units in some ranges e.g. Clayton, as they make them all on site, there is a small surcharge.

We spent ages looking for a 1.5 bowl sink that would fit in a 500 unit for my mum's kitchen. In the end she found a Capel sink that would fit in 550 and had a bespoke unit made. But we did look at some really neat little 500 sinks - Blanco - Axis II 5 S-IF, Blanco Lantos 5S. They have a separate strainer part that is shallow but better than nothing IYSWIM.

Could you have a shallow bookcase on the empty wall - like a Billy? Even that would take tins or china or packets, you could have doors on it.

Going back to the OP, I think the satisfying thing is to have used every inch of space effectively so you feel you've got your money's worth. At least in a small room you don't have to traipse around it to fetch stuff!

Hiya
As you are having a fitter fit it for you I would check if they have a trade account for Howden's or Benchmarx. They are both reasonably priced I believe but I do know they won't be as cheap as DIY kitchens. The advantages though are you will get to sit down with a designer who may well give you some good space saving ideas. Also never underestimate the fitter being able to pop in to the store and get any missing bits easily without having to wait for them to be ordered and posted out. If you get two quotes you could price compare but howdens won't give you quote direct only to your builder / fitter. It is confusing I agree!! We got ours from benchmarx. xx

StripeyTowels · 30/01/2017 18:12

OK it sounds like you've done lots of thinking!

Definitely. I've done lots of research & thinking, planning, designing, redesigning - I just can't make the kitchen any bigger 😫 I have to make a decision & get it done, but honestly, it's SO not what I want, that I just keep hoping there's somethng I haven't thought of...

I think your layout looks pretty good in terms of sink /hob/fridge. You will have to rely on wall units quite a bit - could you have extra tall ones and a little folding step on a peg somewhere if you need the height?

There isn't much room for wall units either. I need to see how high I can go with the wall units because the builders were clearly drunk when they built these houses, there's not a straight wall or ceiling in any of them! I've had loads taken out & replaced, but even doing that with the bathroom ceiling they really couldn't get it both BE level and LOOK level. Putting units up to the ceiling might highlight this too much, I need to get it checked out. I will if I can. Oh and I'm not quite 5ft so I have a little fold up step I need for the second shelf, for the top shelf I have to get the small step ladder out 😂

In terms of corners maybe a Magic corner in a 500 unit next to the sink

I can't do that really as it'll be too much hassle for the gas meter & stop cock. But it's fine, I have things that can go in the dead end that I don't use very often.

90x90 next to the hob. Yes, I'm hoping to fit one there. Thank you for your photo, it'll come in handy. It's what we did in a previous kitchen when there was a handy OH & tools! grr but it'll be good to have a photo to show the fitter as I don't have any photos of the old kitchen.

Then you can have one 400 drawer stack next to the fridge

Yes, that's on my plan. Couldn't survive without that!

and one 300 (or bespoke) unit with pull-outs to fill the gap on the long side

Yes. I think there's about 480 to play with, but I need to make allowances for a bit of jiggling.

If you have pullout under the sink, it could have a couple of bins plus cleaning/laundry. Possibly, but tbh it's such a faff to put rubbish out here (as I said, down a lane), I think the bins in a 500 sink unit will be just for rubbish/recycling. I've earmarked the cupboard in front if the gas meter & stopcock for cleaning/laundry stuff - I'll just need to cut down drastically!!

DIY Kitchens will make bespoke size units in some ranges e.g. Clayton, as they make them all on site, there is a small surcharge*. Yes, I'd forgotten about that, thanks for the reminder.

Thank you for that, I'll have a look at it in a minute. I don't think I'll have a spare mm on that wall as it's only 1700 and the washing machine will be on the front door end, by the time you deduct the 600 bench width I'm only just left with 500 at a push.

Could you have a shallow bookcase on the empty wall - like a Billy? Even that would take tins or china or packets, you could have doors on it

That wall looks bigger on paper. It's 1900 but you lose a lot at the gall door way because of the fridge going right up to the door way and 600 into the kitchen. Then the other end you're coming in the main entrance of the house so you don't want to be edging between the sink wall bench and another piece of furniture. I'm not sure (and I'm not at home to measure it out) but I think it could only only be about 700 wide. I put a very narrow (paperback depth) x 1100 (ish) high bookcase there last week and hated it. I just felt like I was walking in the front door, into the bookcase, whereas the bins being there doesn't feel like that because they're low. So I think I could cope with a low unit there if I really have to. However, I'm also re-thinking putting a radiator on that wall as it's cold in the kitchen and that seems to have more impact on the hall/lounge than the radiators in the other rooms do to the kitchen. However, the front door needs replacing as there are gaps in it, which there won't be with a composite door. I don't want to do that first though, in case they bash the hell out of it installing the kitchen. Gah. The good thing is, that anything going on that wall needs to be able to be moved, so I can add after the 'built in' bit is done. It's just the radiator I need to decide about.

Going back to the OP, I think the satisfying thing is to have used every inch of space effectively so you feel you've got your money's worth. Yes. It's how I need to feel, but also without feeling hemmed in. The bathroom fitter didn't listen to me & ruined the feel of the bathroom. I'm scared of ending up feeling the same way about the kitchen.

lol At least in a small room you don't have to traipse around it to fetch stuff!. No! I've got a friend who has a lovely big kitchen in an L shape, but feck me, I'm exhausted cooking there as there's miles between the Aga, the fridge, the freezer, the microwave, the dishes... in my previous large kitchen things were closer but still lots more room & a lovely seating area etc. Just as lovely, but less exhausting!

Thank you &🍷🍷...if you made it this far!

littlestar. Yes, once I've decided what I want to do, the fitter will be chosen, partly, depending on where they hold trade account & what tier they're on. I'm not sure how a max discount price from Howden or Benchmarx compare to each other or DIY though. But I'm not sure there'll be a huge difference, especially given I'm not buying that many units.

As I said earlier, if DIY is a contender, then I'll go up to Yorkshire to see their units & their consultants.

I'm going to get the guy from Benchmarx to come out and I'll try a different branch of Howden's, my local one couldn't be less interested in helping.

Also never underestimate the fitter being able to pop in to the store and get any missing bits easily without having to wait for them to be ordered and posted out. It's definitely part of the consideration, but hopefully by seeing a consultant I'll get most of it the first time 😫 & DIY seem to be good at sending additional or replacements for damaged bits out quickly.

Do you work for benchmarx? It would be great to have someone in the 'know' if you do 😁

Thanks accio. I will go and have another look at that option. We have a new branch near us now, so much easier than before.

Hi StripeyTowels. No definitely don't work for benchmarx!! When we asked our builder about kitchens he said them or Howdens. DH quite liked the salesmen he spoke to in benchmarx and when we got the quote our builder said we couldn't do much better price wise for the same spec kitchen and we trusted him. (Rightly or wrongly). I guess we could have got a quote for howdens as well and do the whole bartering thing but frankly I am utterly hopeless at that :). We are happy with the quality of our kitchen. We did need a few bits and pieces during the fit and it was so easy to get them as only down the road (our builder could just pop in). Good luck with what ever you do. Try and enjoy the process if you can. :)

My local Howdens offered to beat the price for like-for-like units from DIY Kitchens. I still didn't go with Howdens, but they are attempting to be competitive.

StripeyTowels · 31/01/2017 07:14

littlestar 😊

After the bathroom nightmare, I'm totally beyond enjoying the process I'm afraid. I'm worried I'm not going to like the kitchen either. I checked when I woke up, but the elves haven't done it overnight. Lazy little buggers.

dotdotdotmustdash. That's good to know, thanks.

I've closed up the hallway doorway again. I prefer the kitchen like this, it feels bigger & like a proper room this way. I just prefer access to the rest of the house not via the lounge & the way the light carries through when that access is open. FFS.

OnePlanOnHouzz · 31/01/2017 07:46

Sometimes it's just time for a new set of eyes on it - do you have a rightmove type plan ?!
So we can see what goes where etc ...

minijoeyjojo · 31/01/2017 08:20

I thought DIY were great. They were helpful when I was ordering and kept on phoning them asking for dimensions. The units were delivered quickly and on time and look good. It even came with some tea and biscuits.

To answer your question, we redid our kitchen at the same time and didn't use DIY kitchens. Only because we went for a bespoke hand made kitchen which is not their remit (think Tom Howley style). That had been an absolute nightmare and I would not recommend that company at all (not that I can because they've disappeared!)
