Kitchen Layout

Evening, everyone - I wondered if any of you might like to comment on my proposed kitchen layout? It's not something I've had done before and I'm worried about making the wrong decision! As the current layout stands, it has a sink on the island. However, I'd rather that the sink wasn't on the island as I'd like to have the work space. Any ideas on an alternative location for the sink ? Or any other thoughts on the plan? Constructive or otherwise!

I think you could add storage on the right hand wall - if that was my kitchen I would add a tea/coffee making station on that wall with a small fridge underneath for milk, juices, yogurts for the children etc. I have a main fridge and a small one and it works really well (especially well when they were little as they couldn't reach the main fridge)

This is very outing if anyone knows me!!!

I also think, move storage (FF and larder) to the RH wall, then you have more worktop in your L to house the sink (on position 2) and the hob/oven. Then a more square island as a flexible space.

In terms of worktop it does look short, I would ask:

  • where will you have kettle/toaster and make tea (essential in my world!)
  • where will dirty pots be stacked?
  • where is your main preparation space and is it near enough to the hob if you are chopping up/adding to a pan/stirring etc? I don't see how this works if the hob is part blocked in a chimney but people do manage it.
  • have you got at least one space to spread out baking or serving up (if the prep space is small)? (i.e. probably the island)

Try and imagine cooking a typical meal or making sandwiches or tea in your kitchen and how it would work/where you would stand.

Notme, I'm going to have a counter bi-folding cabinet in the corner (to the left of No. 2) which will house the kettle and toaster. I can prep to the left and right of hob. Petitdonkey - your kitchen is fabulous! Thanks for sharing, it's always great to see what others have done. I also like your idea of a separate fridge which would always be useful, and the extra storage on the right-hand wall Smile

I guess I could always make my island wider - what do you think?

We have a double width island (which gives another lot of storage underneath of course) with an induction hob on it. So small people can't reach over the island to touch the hob, of course they can reach the front but that's the same as any kitchen.

That gives me a cupboard width on either side for prep as well as the back half - it's brilliant.

Cooker is in a pillar arrangement, sink goes along the wall. If you have a dishwasher you don't spend long doing dishes so you don't need a sink with a view! The sink is above it which is handy for rinsing, draining, stacking etc.

My layout is in fact v similar to petite's but I have the hob where her sink is, fridge where her hob is and my sink goes out where that blue pic is.

So not that similar at all Grin but kinda!

I can't make out the photo very well - so don't know if you have thought of this. But have where you store majority of your crockery eg plates and bowls right next to your dishwasher. It makes emptying it so much quicker! In my mums kitchen you have to dart all over the kitchen to put stuff away, but in my mates it's brilliant and soooo easy. I watch her jealously emptying her dishwasher as the majority of everyday stuff goes in the drawers/cupboards right next to the dishwasher!

The things you need to consider first are the architectural influences you can't change. Or if there's things you could change to line up better - e.g. The roof light - is it too late to change it to portrait instead of landscape to live up with a potential island ?
If you think the type of cooking pans ( handles etc) you have might restrict your use of the hob or a cooker between the old brick piers - is it worth building that side run out to absorb the pillars ? And then you have no restrictions ? And can place the hob anywhere or even swap it for the sink in the island ?
The more symmetry and lining up of things you can do - the neater and more considered looking the outcome will be ! ( well in my experience which is 32 years designing kitchens !)

Windowbasket · 28/01/2017 20:55

Thanks, oneplan - re the rooflight - you're right and I've already spoken to the architect about this. Do you think I could get away with an 1200 wide island in that space or would it be too dominant? I really struggle to visualise everything.

When we were deciding on where to put things we had the plans and scaled 2D squares/shapes to scale of fridge, freezer, table etc and spent ages moving them around to what looked best where

Hope you can make sense of what I am trying to explain

You can just start off with a scaled drawing either architect one or your own, measure the items of furniture you think are going in the space or that you already have then work out the sizes of things like the island afterwards cos you can then see how you will move around the space

RTKangaMummy · 28/01/2017 23:18

I mean the 2D pictures were made of paper and card

OnePlanOnHouzz · 29/01/2017 15:45

Have pm'd you ! It's tricky to give a definitive answer without sizes !
