Odd layout - help!

I have a three storey Victorian (1912) house which we are trying to finish doing up. The top floor is causing an almighty headache as it has a really odd layout. Previously a separate flat it has two good size bedrooms, another room which we intend to use as a bathroom and another odd, very narrow room with an internal and external window. It was used as a bathroom but only had room for the bath and a sink at the end it is so narrow. Our options so far are, using it as as a storeroom or knocking the internal wall with the window down, to create a galleried landing.

To complicate the issue the ceiling slopes at an angle as it is under the eaves.

I really can't picture what to do and am puzzled by the room itself and the internal window. What would it have been used for when the house was built? And how can we (without spending a fortune) create a useable layout? I've attached a very dodgy picture Ive just done on my phone and will take some pics tomorrow if that will help.

Thanks.

If you did a galleried landing you could put a pretty occasional chair and one of those little leather topped side tables there to make a reading nook? I'd go for getting light in if you can.

I'd go for walk in wardrobe - can you change entrance from landing to bedroom 1 so it looks like it's designed for that purpose? Lots of open shelving and hanging rails like you'd get in a posh hotel.

I would also assume it's not a 'real' room i.e. original to the house but something that has been created as part of the conversion at a previous point in the house's history.

Who will occupy the top floor? And how much storage do you have elsewhere? Those two questions would decide what I did with it, tbh.

Open landing and lightwell for the stairs shouldn't be discounted - we have a really dark upstairs hall, I'd love more light in it. I's probably personally go for a library/reading nook, and knock the wall, if the bedrooms up there are occasional use.

You could have a half-size wall instead of bannisters and totally open - you'd get more light but could retain some wall for storage perhaps?

If a bedroom up there was intended to be in use by the family full-time, I would probably go for the dressing room idea (maybe with a sink too if plumbing already exists?) but knocking down the wall between the bedroom and the extra room to have 2 windows. Could you have a window seat under the extra window?

My first thought was if it's in The attic then it's more likely to be kids rooms

Why not a secret den? Toy room - or homework area?

Even a small sofa and an Xbox? Mini fridge?

Or I do like the idea of extending the landing -

Ok, photos as promised...

Pic 1 shows facing wall as you come up the stairs. This was obviously put in to create separate flat, is only plasterboard and is coming down.

Pic 2 shows the wall with the internal window.

Pic 3 gives you an idea of the layout of the two front rooms and the narrow landing.

Trying to upload a pic of the room of doom behind the internal window but it won't let me at the moment - I'll try again later.

You don't need a shower room up there and sounds like it's not bit/nice enough to be a pleasant study or work room. So sounds like it is either storage if you need it, or a nice big light landing if you don't.

Yup I'm fairly sure originally that would have been one large room in the front.

We repositioned a stud wall a few years ago and I remember thinking that it looked lovely and light in the room with the two windows before the stud went back in. We could see from the floorboards it had once been all one room.

I think if I hadn't seen the gorgeous big room flooded with light I would say do the landing but now I have I'm big, light bedroom all the way.

If you want to make the hall lighter glazed panels (these can be patterned or frosted for privacy), light tubes or even just actual lights etc can all help.

If your house is of particular historical interest your local historical society may have some information about it.

We used to live in a listed cottage and found records about our house online including the national archives. A quick Google may show the outside of your house as it was over the years to help give you an idea and if you're lucky there may be plans.

Was there anything with your deeds? When was the flat converted because that might show original plans.

That window doesn't look very period in style so i would probably either keep it and put frosted window film on the panes or I would change it for something more in keeping. I wouldn't lose it because I like quirky things and because it will bring light to the landing.

But if you don't want to start pulling down more walls have a look at walk-in wardrobes on Houzz and Pinterest. Just having all your shoes nicely laid out, handbags, winter/summer clothes storage... yummy!

If your house is one of similar ones on the same road, check local planning online. Early 20th century houses were often built in identical "blocks"
You might be able to find another house with same layout and browse to see what it's like internally.
Or if your house has a" twin" on the same road which has been renovated, call round or pop a note through door asking if they could let you look round to see the finished potential
