DD and her boyfriend are looking at flats in this area. Is it a good and safe place to live? She currently lives in Clapham Common.

Haven’t been there for a while but found it scary. If I was going to live in a dodgy area then I’d choose south London where at least you get more for your money.

I have family in Wood Green (Ally Pally side) and visit regularly. Their street is quiet and pleasant, neighbours are lovely, a real community feel. I often arrive quite late at night and walk from the Underground to their house. Never been bothered at all - and I live in the depths of the country. The High Street is just - well, a busy High Street in London.
Frankly, I feel less threatened there on a Saturday night than I did in the "naice" country town I used to live in 10 years ago.

I was in Wood Green today. It never feels unsafe even on the back car park stairs of Morrison’s after dark and it definitely is more up in an up and coming sense than. Few years ago with the new artisan bread shop the new posh chip shop and there are big regeneration plans for the area with the redevelopment of the gas works

I have recently moved to Wood Green. It’s great! Full of parks and the high street has Pret A Manger, five guys, and amazing Turkish restaurants. Also Wood Green has the green rooms, the blue yard, the prince, and up near ally pally is the starting gate. People from nearby more expensive areas can be very snobby about it but not everyone can afford to live in crouch end or muswell hill. Any affordable part of London will not feel 100% safe but like anywhere in London you need to be sensible. It’s a really multicultural area which I love and yeah not everyone who lives here is rich. Very different vibe from other rich parts of Haringey but I prefer it. Great to be on the Piccadilly line and I’ve found people v friendly.

My info is out of date, lived there in the 2000s.
I felt unsafe, gangs of men roaming and looking at your front private area, trying to touch. Constant gang murders, hate preachers in the shopping area (the group in question have now been banned)etc etc. Filthy streets, sofas in gardens. But further up Bounds Green was better or just next to Ally Pally. Or go further out to Southgate. Might be better now?

There are many parts of Wood Green, the roads around the main high road from Turnpike Lane northwards are not so nice. A really nice area are the roads, next to the park, Woodside, Arcadian, Maryland, lovely Edwardian houses, and they are also very close to Myddleton Road which is developing into a vibrant area and community.

It is easy to get to both Wood Green and Bounds Green tube from there and also a few minutes walk to Bowes Park station with fast trains into town.

Thanks for all of the advice and comments. To update, they bought in South Tottenham, and are very happy there. Another daughter lives in London Fields, so they are reasonably close to each other. The transport links, particularly via Seven Sisters, are pretty good, so all ended well.

'Poncey tapas and estate agents' doesn't sound too bad, I have to say! Civilised anyway. I lived in Wood Green for seven years and it was awful. Not good for the mental health, Wood Green.

Lived there 30 years ago. Was the sort of ok then rather soulless? Great time to buy though s it is are ripe for gentrification if you wait long enough. Back then Finsbury Park and Dalston were the no go areas.

Clubme · 28/12/2019 15:26

It's a terrible area. Lived there for 11 years. If you can, avoid !!!
