Sink on the island? Or hob?

How can we make the decision?
Do I spend longer at the sink? Or longer at the hob?

Whichever one goes on the island will be nicest to be at, looking left to the garden or ahead into the rest of the room.
The other one will go on the wall behind the island so no view at all.

if you possibly can, I'd go for neither. the sink always has mess around it (washing up bottle, things drying etc). and the hob will need an extractor over the island which also looks a mess. I like to keep my island clear for food prep and put everything else around the sides.

I would prefer to have neither. But if you have to I would go for the hob over the sink.

I think I have got it covered if we put the sink on the island by having a very functional drawer housing underneath, that will have all utensils, washing up liquid etc in it.
And I guess if the hob is there, we would have a similar unit underneath with oils, spatulas etc.

The island is going to be quite large (3m long) and will need to house either item. Or both.

I would put the sink in the island (perhaps a nice Belfast sink),then you can enjoy the view while washing up.
i'd put the hob by the wall,as I'm guessing you will have more worktop against the wall rather than on the island?so you will have more room to cook and plate up.

I think it depends how you live and how you socialise. We use our island pretty much constantly - children sitting there eating / doing homework / just sitting, as do guests when they come. I like cooking but I'm quite a messy cook and don't like people watching me so I didn't want to be on show cooking. Also, didn't want steam / fat in front of guests when they were sat at the island, and didn't want the safety of the children to be compromised either.

We also don't tend to wash up much (it all goes in the dishwasher) and what there is, we do as we go along and put it away. So there's no sink full of dirty pots or pots draining.

Logistically, it was also miles easier for us to have extraction on an outside wall (rather than over the hob) and also didn't want a chunky ceiling extractor spoiling my line of sight hanging down in the middle of the room. You can get the hob mounted extractors but they are £££.

So we have the sink of the island with the hob on an outside wall.

*I meant island mounted extractors (behind the hob) that go and down as you need them!

Rented a house with a sink on the island. Found it a bit of a pain. The island became a dumping ground for everything- paperwork etc- and then it all used to get splashed form the sink.

If it's a long island, why not both, one at each end with a great work space between. Then all your storage on the back wall. If you're conscious of mess you could have an upstand with the "breakfast bar" side a bit higher. I don't know if you can do that with a hob, maybe if it's induction not gas you would not be in danger of something falling onto it.

In answer to OP, I suspect the longest time is spent at the "preparation" space between the sink and hob, rather than either of them specifically. Definitely so if you have a dishwasher.

Our new kitchen starts in March and we plan to have the sink on the island.

Originally it was the hob but the extractor fan became an issue as we will be having a vaulted ceiling. Plus there's the safety issue of having the kids sitting opposite at the island whilst cooking.

If you have the sink on the wall - and if you have wall mounted taps - you can have a chopping boards that slides over an under mounted sink to hide the clutter ... of you want to avoid sink clutter being visable ...

also consider which, in your instance, is easier to vent for the cooker good - if you cook lots of very spicy or fragrant dishes - a hob on wall run, venting straight out might be a good option !

I think we're going for hob, but having a wide island so kids won't be able to reach it when sitting

We decided definitely no hob on the island so no small children could burn themselves by sneaking up around the back.

However I was amused by the title and my gut reaction would be to not put the sink on the hob.

We've got a hob on the island with a downdraft, so no overhead extractor. It works really well for us.

If you are having your sink in the island make sure the DW is nearby. Ours is opposite side of the kitchen, pita for rinsing/draining cups etc, as need to walk driiping items from sink across the floor.

And you are right raisingsteam, it is the prep that I enjoy the most and takes the longest so thank you, that has confirmed my view that I only want only hob or sink on the island, not both so I have plenty of space for prep (I prep first, then clear up then cook usually)

And I think the splashes, which I'm guessing there will be even with an induction hob (I've never used one before but I imagine the wok will still work the same) will be better managed against a wall and not on an island.
