Help with kitchen layout

We are currently going back through planning on our single storey extension, and despite multiple conversations over layouts, DH has now voiced concern over our kitchen/diner....

I simply can't see what else we can do in the space apart from an L shaped design. The room dimensions are 4m x 4.25, whilst that may not seem particularly big to some, we have a dainty 18th century cottage, the extension is as big as we are allowed to go. We have sacrificed some space to give us a seperate utility, toilet and shower room. The wall seperating the room from the living room is currently an external wall and made of sandstone, which we are going to leave exposed (would be an offence to cover it imo!!), so we don't want kitchen cabinets along there. The plan is to put a big, rustic table in there which uses the space nicely, but DH is now saying it looks odd having all that space. He has no imagination and cannot imagine a table there..... sigh

Am I missing any obvious solutions here to better use the space!?

I'd originally wanted the whole fireplace look over the range cooker, but there is no way it would fit in sadly :-((

No no no!!!

Don't fill all that lovely space with an island!

I have had two houses with similar sized kitchens and the previous owners had put islands in which made it an awful squeeze to get a table in. We removed them and it was so much better.

It was much nicer having the flexibility to add tables to accommodate more people for special occasions.

Carry on as you were, don't let DH put you off. You will not have 'too much space'. If he starts wittering on about it again tell him you can look at a French dresser if it feels too spacious (don't even understand that concept myself! But it won't anyway).

can I ask what you used to do the 3d type plans? I will end up with a 19ft by 13ft space and builder has suggested an island AND a table but I'm struggling to picture whether it would be slightly too cramped. thank you

I sent DIY kitchens my kitchen plan to price up and they put all the items in a basket to save for when we are ready to order.

I don't really know where to start but want to give it a try lol

I think there is an app called tap glance where you can create 3ds.

hilbil I used the magnet online kitchen designer, but there is also one on ikea too.

I think we have reached an agreement that he will just trust me 😂😂😂
