How much did it cost you to do your kitchen?

And what was your initial budget compared to the final money spent?

We are going to do our kitchen, it's an ok size, perhaps 4x5m. we would be getting new worktops, cupboard a doors, a cupboard put in and perhaps one taken away. A fake arch taken down. New Lino and wallpaper stripped and repainted. Perhaps the ceiling re plastered and definitely new lights and fittings. Oh and a new oven and fridge.

Not looking for top of the range or luxuries, but wanting looking good.

What do you think?

Got a quote today for £6785 from Howdens, including the appliances (oven, mw, fridge/freezer). That was for the slightly heavier doors on the units so if we go for the lighter ones (which we probably will) that will cut the costs down too.

Of course, we now need to find out how much the flooring, joiner, electrician and plasterer will be.....

Thanks everyone for your input!

I really think you should consider getting better white goods.

Google "Lamona Appliances"

DozyDorissimo · 11/01/2017 08:37

we spent over £20K which included new fridge, cooker, granite worktops in kitchen and utility, units etc by John Lewis and a new boiler.

KitKats28 · 11/01/2017 15:34

I don't know where I'm going wrong. Our kitchen is tiny - 2.4m x 2.6m, and the three I've looked at (Ikea, B&Q and Wickes) are all coming in around
£5-6 k fitted. That's with no white goods, just a new hob, and no flooring or tiling. Confused

I fitted the kitchen in our old house myself, but I'm disabled now so can't do this one.

Sgtmajormummy · 11/01/2017 17:04

I think IKEA are a bit cheeky with their kitchens. They reel you in with their cheap furniture and basic appliances, but as soon as you go above that they're as expensive as the other makes.

Iggi999 · 11/01/2017 19:21

I hadn't heard of Howdens before, very interesting post earlier about Homebase I'd have though they were more similar to B&Q (who we've used once but not again).
I just want one arrangement that covers units, electrics, plumbing and tiling and floors. I do not want to source different people for different things. Life is busy enough.

Iloverupertp · 11/01/2017 20:22

IKEA will not come out to do a design before building work has been done.wont come out whilst it's been done and then have a 6-8 wait for delivery of kitchen!
Won't be using them

SorrelForbes · 11/01/2017 20:28

Have a look at Units Online. Similar to DIY Kitchens.

OnePlanOnHouzz · 11/01/2017 21:55

I've recently had clients who couldn't get John Lewis to design before building works too - it's a bit of a thing apparently ! Oddly enough I can design these with no problem at all !! Maybe they just don't like reading architects plans ?

WeeM · 11/01/2017 22:01

Decent quality kitchen but nothing ultra fancy, laminate flooring, no major plumbing/electrical work, Neff oven and hob-around £6-7k so as long as you're not knocking down walls etc I think your budget is doable.

WeeM · 11/01/2017 22:02

Ours is Howdens-really nice quality. And because the cupboards all come pre built its less fitting time to pay.

dotdotdotmustdash · 12/01/2017 18:50

We had our kitchen measured up by Howdens the other day and got the quote through earlier today. I mentioned when the sales chap was here that I had priced up our kitchen on DIYKitchens.com, and including appliances it all came to just over 4k. The quote from Howdens came in at £4.7k but the salesman added in the email that if I email them the shopping list from DIYkitchens they will try to price match. It might be worth doing as I reckon Howdens will be losing business to DIY and are doing their best to be competitive. I don't think we'll be going with Howdens, we had a local company, well-recommended, in last night and we really like the chap and hope his quote comes in within budget.

Iggi999 · 12/01/2017 18:51

I'm a bit confused re Howdens - do they do the installation themselves or do you need to find someone to do that?

WeeM · 12/01/2017 19:33

Howdens is trade only so you need to get a joiner to buy it for you. You can go into the shop to look and pick though and they will design it too for you.

WeeM · 12/01/2017 19:36

Getting the likes of b and q or Homebase to fit them for you is a fortune. The price they quoted us for the labour was equal to the price of the units!

PigletJohn · 12/01/2017 22:13

The quality of the fitting is the most important part, so try to get recommendations and inspect previous work.

Kitchen fitters are not always good plumbers or electricians, but perhaps it doesn't matter because it will be out of sight behind the units. off

KitKats28 · 13/01/2017 07:19

Can I ask you Piglet John, if I look for a kitchen fitter, would I expect them to do everything i.e. taking the old kitchen out, building and fitting the units, tiling, flooring etc; or would I need to look for separate people. It's probably a very stupid question, but I've always done all that sort of thing myself up till I became disabled, and I don't really have a clue where to start with tradespeople.

SleepForTheWeak · 13/01/2017 07:23

I really wanted to have a company/person do all the work but I've not managed to find anyone able to do it (maybe backside of where I live)

I'm now trying to co ordinate the joiner, electrician, decorator,
Plumber and someone to fit the gas hob. Will also need to get someone for the floor 😩.

On the plus side, joiner is only charging us £500 for all the work including knocking down an arch structure, knocking down a cupboard and building a new one. He's a family friend though so gave us a good price.

I have no idea where we should be starting....

KitKats28 · 13/01/2017 07:30

Oh god Sleep, that gives me hives just thinking about co-ordinating all that😥

I live in the arse end of nowhere too. Is buying a new house with a kitchen I like too extreme...? 😉

PigletJohn · 13/01/2017 09:52

Kitchen fitters usually rip the old one out, that's the easy bit.

And will do the other stuff, though I prefer to have the electrical work done by an electrician, and the plumbing by a plumber. A kitchen fitter should know local people they work with. It is a bit optimistic to hope one person will do a first class job at everything.

OnePlanOnHouzz · 13/01/2017 15:58

Electrics need to be done and signed off by a part P registered electrician. Similarly gas needs to be done by a certified Gas Safe tradesperson.
Some kitchen fitters are certified in both of these but most aren't and need to bring onboard other tradespeople to fulfil these roles .

ivytable · 13/01/2017 16:35

We're in Scotland just had our ikea kitchen done before Christmas (about 4x4m). They came out to measure space and design the kitchen. We kept our fridge freezer and washing machine, everything else new including dishwasher, oven, hob microwave. We went for a laminate worktop, also went for ikea wall panels rather than tiles and we also have an island. Approx £4000 for kitchen, £2000 for fitting (including electrician etc), £700 karndean floors, £200 painting walls.
