Attempted to negotiate price after survey but instead got gazumped. How to recover?

After our survey we attempted to negotiate on the price. The seller did not budge. So we accepted this and agreed to continue. Enjoyed Christmas then found out that in the meantime they have gone back to another buyer who had been lingering and accepted a higher offer. So we have been gazumped. All fees paid for and close to exchange. I guess there is nothing we can do? How does anyone recover from this. We totally love the house but stupidly thought we could negotiate with problems in survey. We are nearly a year into this now and I want to give up. Uggghh.

It sounds like there are a few people on here who've been on the other side of this. I have and it was really annoying but we did accept the lower offer as we didn't want to lose the house we were getting but they were definitely being sneaky as it was so close to completion. You hear more and more of people doing it but also more of vendors not standing for it. It's a real bonus if a buyer assures a vendor now that they won't do it, as it's a known strategy to get a few quid off.
You say you were following advice though so it's unfortunate it's turned out like this. Chalk it up to experience and good luck for the future.

You decided to renegotiate the price, ot didn't work out for you. Perhaps the sellers thought you may try again just before exchange and didn't want to take the risk, maybe they have more faith in the new buyers. Asking to lower the price is always going to be a risk.
