Woodburner without a chimney

Has anyone done this? Does it cost much more than with a chimney?

Where does the smoke go?

Yes I have done this. We have a flue fitted which runs up through the lounge, through a fitted wardrobe in the corner of the bedroom and out through the roof. The flue is expensive but then again if you have a proper chimney you still have to have it lined so it's all swings and roundabouts!

Do you mean a gas one?!

It's a bit more expensive than getting a normal chimney lined, but not outrageously so.

You need an external flue, called a twin flue system I think, which attaches to the stove and goes outside of your house and up the wall towards the roof (assuming you have an external wall!) Or like a PP mentioned you can run a flue pipe up through your house, but as far as I know this is more expensive than going straight outside and uses up space in the upstairs room.

A google images search will be helpful as will a trip to your local fireplace shop!

We have our wood burner in an old existing fireplace, with an old existing chimney (we paid for a modern liner etc.) So the burner doesn't take up much useful room and only one side would need a fire guard if young children are visiting.
A wood burner can be sited in the middle of a space but the safety aspect would be more complicated... so it's a fancy rather than utilitarian option...

A neighbour has had one fitted. The flue goes up from the stove for about two feet then kicks toward the outside wall at an angle, through the wall outside and the outside flue continues up towards the roof. If I'm honest it reminds me of a boiler room but they're happy and that's all that matters

Sorry I should have said that I don't know the cost. We had a multi fuel fitted four years ago but we had a proper fireplace and chimney was ok so there wasn't much work other than the fitting.
