Allsloppy · 11/12/2016 15:38

Am looking at buying some oak veneer internal doors. Has anybody used door supplies online?? Or has anyone a recommended place to buy doors.

We bought ours from b&q 2 for £150

Have you found a chippy to fit them yet? When you do, ask who she recommends. There will be at least one door merchant in your town.

A pro can fit a door much better and much faster than a builder, DIYer or handywoman.

Luv2chat2U · 11/12/2016 17:02

I saw some a few months ago in wickes....I believe they had grooves running straight down them....

PigletJohn · 11/12/2016 17:25

Wickes have quite a wide range, and usually have an offer if you buy 2 or 5. You might have to order some versions. I know some of their doors are made by Premdor, you can search their website and they may have stockists that carry, or can order, more than you will see in showrooms.

Look at the weight of the door. Less than about 25kg might be a frail or hollow door. Light doors feel cheap and insubstantial, and do not block noise well.

If you have a 3-story house, or a flat, you may need fire doors, usually sold as FD30. They are thicker and heavier, but IMO better. They are generally available in the same styles as other doors.

Unless you are strong and have a van, have them delivered.

We used builder depot

loopsngeorge · 11/12/2016 20:31

Same here, builder depot had the cheapest prices for our xl joinery doors

YelloDraw · 11/12/2016 20:54

Wicks have lots of oak veneer doors - I got some traditional 4 panel ones from there. 2 for £150. They feel really nice and heavy and look lovely. Haven't oiled hem yet.

ChippyDucks · 11/12/2016 20:59

We got ours from Magnet. Love them.

PigletJohn · 11/12/2016 21:23

I have a Magnet trade account, but I thought they didn't sell joinery retail?

Stillunexpected · 11/12/2016 21:33

Our chippy got ours from Magnet but said he would also have been happy to use Howdens. Very pleased with them so far.

Needmoresleep · 11/12/2016 23:41

Just had to replace a lovely veneer door in a smart 10 year old rental property. It had been made by Premdor. If you see something you like on their website, and they have some really nice stuff, you can order it through one of their distributors. I've ordered through Travis Perkins and the price is less than the list trade price.

Piglet John is probably right on getting a specialist in (aside from the fact that he is always right!). My handyman is organising for his chippie mate to hang it.

HeirOfNothingInParticular · 12/12/2016 08:25

I got mine from here www.savoytimber.com/

Fitting was a nightmare. I employed a 'time served' joiner who had been recommended. I think he did his time in Strangeways. He made a mess of my doors. My brother, who is a joiner, has just tidied one up for me and he said it was a bodge. Usually my brother would have done them but he has been ill and didn't want to ask him. Wish I'd waited 😡

Koala2 · 12/12/2016 12:59

I've had a bad experience with quality of doors from xl joinery - I wouldn't recommend.

IloveCheese11 · 12/12/2016 13:05

We got ours from Todd's doors. Nice quality and a good price.

TrainsCanComeTrue · 12/12/2016 14:28

Todd Doors. Best price and they are lovely. Carpenter checked there they were from and then said he wished people would people would stop buying them B&Q and get them from places like Todds.

Stripyfeet · 12/12/2016 14:29

We ordered from local timber merchants, much cheaper than online companies for the same product and the delivery service was excellent. Xl joinery I think, quite satisfied with quality, although they did come unfinished. Local carpenter fitted.

Allsloppy · 12/12/2016 19:01

Thanks for your replies. I have been to wickes today and after reading the reviews I think I am going to go with them after all. Look good doors for a good price. Got a carpenter to fit them. He has been doing other work for me so hope to get it done before xmas. Wish me luck.

OOI, which one?

Allsloppy · 12/12/2016 21:51

Gone for the Geneva cottage style doors. A bit predictable but live in a 1960 house with plain flat white doors so looking forward to an update. This year had house rewired (that wasn't too bad) and some replastering (that was a messy nightmare). New laminate flooring and now doors are the final step. Took a year to get it done but next is the garden.

Was going to use Todd doors (fantastic quality) but after pricing up whole house was teetering over budget. Then looked at Wickes 2 for £150, good value. Finally, builder brought trade price list home from Howdens and they were hands down cheapest, plus builder would do all the ordering and picking up etc so went for it. £50 for standard door, £100 for fire ex Vat.
Having lots of works in house right now and every trade person has asked where they're from as they're lovely. Don't forget the handles, stops, locks, fitting costs all add to the final bill. I've already had to get builders to sand bottoms a few times for new flooring etc.
