All ignition on gas hob suddenly stopped working

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be? One minute all were working fine and the next not one of the rings would ignite by holding down the knob as it's turned.

Is it sparking? Have you run out of gas? We're on LPG and have just had to change the tank as the old one was empty.

CondensedMilkSarnies · 10/12/2016 01:56

Is it making the clicking noise ? I may be wrong but does the ignition thingy run off batteries ? If so maybe they need changing .

NightWanderer · 10/12/2016 02:08

I was going suggest changing the batteries too.

stonecircle · 10/12/2016 02:11

The gas is fine - I used the rings tonight but had to light the gas with a match.

Normally you turn a knob and hold it down for the clicking sound of the ignition and it works.

The ignition runs off electricity because if I put the wall switch up for the electric oven then the ignition doesn't work. But the wall switch is on and the oven is working fine too.

The troubleshooting bit of the guide that came with it doesn't say anything about batteries .... (or much about anything really!)

Have you recently cleaned the top of the stove? Mine wouldn't light once because the ignition bit was covered in dried on cleaning product.

jaffajiffy · 10/12/2016 05:39

There may be a switch to restore electricity to the hob. In a cupboard or near the hob somewhere.

stonecircle · 10/12/2016 07:22

I clean the hob every few days - it's black and shiny and shows every mark! But I'm not sure how that would account for all 5 rings stopping to ignite at the same time when seconds earlier they'd all been working. I wonder if there is another switch somewhere - I'll check when I get up.

How to fix a gas stove that won't light

Squirrelsmum · 10/12/2016 07:27

There is a solenoid that works the igniters, if they have all stopped working you'll need to get it replaced. Usually a quick repair.

stonecircle · 10/12/2016 07:32

Why - I did look at that article when I was googling for ideas. I'm certain it's not food debris or a faulty igniter (there's no spark at all, of any colour. That just leaves a loose wire I guess. Sounds like a job for an electrician!

Do have a look in nearby cupboards for a switch that may have accidentally been switched off. We manually lit ours for many months, with DH blaming me for breaking our hob, until he stumbled across this switch!

stonecircle · 10/12/2016 07:56

Jaffajjiffy and Coolbanas - I love you both BlushBlushBlushBlush

I made meatballs and pasta last night. I have a stack of frying pans/woks on the bottom of the cupboard next to the oven. In pulling one out I must have accidentally knocked the switch I didn't know was there until you suggested it.

And now my hob is merrily clicking away....

May have done that myself before BlushBlushGrin

MaitlandGirl · 10/12/2016 11:02

Glad it was something so simple (and free!) :)

stonecircle · 10/12/2016 13:00

I'm relieved it was something simple too! I've just had to replace my fridge freezer and my tumble dryer has recently given up the ghost. I was beginning to think my kitchen was conspiring against me!

I know this is a zombie thread but I just had this exact problem, googled, this thread came up and I had done exactly the same thing to the plug I also didn't know was there Grin Thank you wise Mumsnetters of yore!
