Fair quote for tiling

Hoping to get the floor of our new extension tiled before Christmas. We've had difficulty getting anyone to get back to us with quotes but have finally had one come through today. It's more expensive than I was expecting but I haven't managed to get any other quotes to compare so wondering if anyone can tell me if it is reasonable.

How much would you expect a quote to be for underfloor heating mats to be laid, then a screed, then approx 25m of porcelain tiles laid?

Has anyone had any tiling done recently?

For that area of tiles perhaps £800-£1000 for the adhesive, grout and laying? Depends a bit on the size of tiles and complexity of shape. Scred etc - not sure on materials, a days labour maybe ? Heating mats - lots of types available but you can get online prices so it would be labour - perhaps half a day ? Also the scred needs to go off before you can tile, the tile adhesive will also need to set before you can turn the UFH on. Xmas might be optimistic ??

We've just paid £950 for our HUGE bathroom - walls and floor.

Thanks for replies. I'm sorry I didn't make it clear in my post. We have the tiles, heating mats, adhesive, screed, grout etc. The quote I've got is purely for the labour. Jilly - did that price for your bathroom include materials.

I know I'm being optimistic for it to be done by Christmas. The extension wasn't due to be completed until the New Year but our builders have been fantastic and finished early. I'm just being greedy now wanting everything finished off!

I wouldn't pay any more than £150/day for a decent tiler. Ask your tiler, how many days will it take him. I've used several and to lay natural marble stone I've never paid over £200/day for the best in an expensive place to live. I usually find the professionals charge this sort of rate, and the cowboys like to extort as much as possible.

didireallysaythat · 11/12/2016 09:11

Tilers around here won't quite by the day, just the square metre. And I struggle to find anyone at £150/day - only mate's labourers or less skilled apprentices come in that cheap (or people who aren't booked up, suggesting they aren't that good!)

Tatey25 · 11/12/2016 09:30

I know tilers, just like carpet fitters, like to charge a rate/m2, which is fine. However, you can reconcile their quote back to a day rate to see if you are being over charged.

didireallysaythat · 11/12/2016 10:11

I did that calculation Tatey and was shocked. But I couldn't find anyone cheaper (got 5+ quotes) so figured it was the going rate (to be fair I don't know how much the fixtures cost).

Murphysgirl · 11/12/2016 10:44

On that basis then our tiler is charging £35 m2. What rate was yours didireallysayrhat?

Paid £37 but quotes went up to £53. Very happy with the £37 (I'm sure the £53 would have been ok too), team of 5 laid it in less than 7 hours. £53 man would have been there all week and stopped other things happening.

OhIfIMust · 13/12/2016 07:24

I've been told that £40 m2 is the going rate - to include all grout and adhesive. That's in the south east.

didireallysaythat · 13/12/2016 12:42

So £150/day would have to be laying tiles very slowly to work out at £35-40m^2 !
