Kitchen Island pendant spacing?

Our kitchen island is 1.8m long and just wondered how to choose size of pendant? I don't want them to be too far apart but equally don't want them to look cramped together!! Is there some sort of formula to work out size?? Confused

Odd numbers work better visually than even so for an island that length you're looking at three medium sized ones - spacing needs to be even with one in the centre 90cm from the outer edges of the island and I'd put the ones either side 60cm away from the central one. Nice and symmetrical. Or use smaller pendants and have 5.

I think on a 1.8m sized island I'd opt for two - each about .3m in from each end - unless they are less than 200mm diameter lights ?!

Defo three not two!

changychangy · 04/12/2016 16:38

Ours is the same and we have 3 equally spaced out.

To be clearer on what I was saying - I've added a diagram …

If the length of island is 1800mm and you have pendants approx. 300mm wide, then two works better, as ideally you need 300mm head room at each end too, and more than 300mm between the lights so they don't look crowded ...

But if you are going for smaller width pendants then three might be ok.... so basically depends on the size of the pendants ...

BUT if you have a hob or some other element in the island that's placed either centrally or offset like a sink or marble pastry rolling slab etc - this will also have a bearing to some extent too - as you can't put a light fitting over a gas hob for example … or you may with to light the pastry rolling area etc.

I've added a diagram everyone loves a good diagram ;-) OnePlanOnHouzz always has good suggestions

Thanks all. I'm quite keen on three too! But don't want it to look overcrowded! I will have a look for smaller pendants as 30cm sounds like might be too big!!

If you have LED6 or LED10 downlighters in your ceiling, you won't need many if any ceiling pendants. I have recently upgraded my LED3 to LED10 downlighters and it has made a huge difference to the lighting in my dining area.

We have 2 but they are quite big. We also have downlighting but yiu do need pendants too for moonlighting, aesthetics etc

allthebestnames what a gorgeous kitchen! Yes I do think 2 oversized ones look really good too!

Probably don't 'need' the pendants but I really like the look it gives to the overall kitchen!!

It's a painted shaker affair with whiteish (marble look) Silestone.

I have a similar style light but bigger over the table.
