Kitchen/Bathroom regrets

The end is in sight for completion of my new kitchen. However, I'm already regretting the tiles I chose that are now on the wall and grouted. This mistake is taking the shine off my long awaited renovation. I'll have to leave it for a couple of years before I can justify the expense of changing them.

What are your instant regrets relating to your new bathroom, kitchen or any other renovation work?

Not doing a small extension to square off the room. Although cost wise probably wouldn't have been worth it, but it would have really improved the space and it still bugs me

Black floor tiles in the kitchen. I have to sweep/hoover and mop daily as they show EVERY crumb, bit of fluff and footprint.

Bloody hate them. (The rest of the k).itchen is gorgeous

RNBrie · 02/12/2016 19:40

What tiles did you get and why do you hate them op? I've got about 50 tiles samples sat in my bathroom right now!!

SweepTheHalls · 02/12/2016 19:40

Not enough lighting in the breakfast area. It's too dark!

Squidgems · 02/12/2016 19:46

That's the thing isn't it user1471549018. You think that your decisions are made for sensible reasons and everything will be okay. But sometimes just being okay isn't enough when you have to live with it for years to come.

Floor tiles. Too light so get dirty easily and too cold. I didn't want tiles but we couldn't agree on anything and I got fed up thinking about it.
Plus a bit bland with the rest of the kitchen

IlPorcupinoNilSodomyEst · 02/12/2016 19:50

Not enough downlighters, we should have put them closer together and an extra one in each row - I end up putting the extractor light on to be able to see clearly in the food prep area. Also bloody vinyl flooring that has never gone right - we had the fitter in four times and it still annoys me!

Ivory porcelain high gloss tiles, look gorgeous however even with a working water softener (have tested bathroom water) you get water marks from the odd drops of water unless they are wiped immediately!

The fancy pop up waste in the bath.

Namechanger5432121 · 02/12/2016 20:22

Shamelessly placemarking as we are currently in middle of complete house renovation!

Squidgems · 02/12/2016 20:41

Hi RNBrie. The tiles I've got are Homebases' Riva in beige. Supposed to be a mosaic effect on the cheap. Looking at a couple of them they are nice but a whole expanse of them is a bit bleurgh. Should have gone for the tile in grey (now realise better mosaic effect) or something totally different. Maybe I should have been more with it and just had an upstand instead.

Not putting underfloor heating in en suite. Blardy freezing ALL the time.

3kidsandus · 04/12/2016 07:40

Near the end of our renovation! At the moment I'm regretting not getting the kitchen company to fit kitchen! It saved about 1k but has caused a lot of problems!! They accidentally cut a side panel which we now have to wait until January to get a replacement for Sad

changychangy · 04/12/2016 07:46

Not kitchen or bathroom but why did I have the sitting room painted^^ brown?
Farrow and Ball told me it would be understated and warm but it looks like someone has smoked 500 fags a day for 20 years.

allegretto · 04/12/2016 07:49

Not my mistake but the previous owners. There is a huge bathroom mirror which matches the rest of the bathroom and it has a built in light which has broken and we can't get the replacement part- so annoying.

VeryPunny · 04/12/2016 07:50

A master light switch. Th ceiling lights have switches at both entrances to th kitchen, but the lights under the units only have a switch at the back entrance. The number of times I've been on my way out and had to trek back down the house to turn off the kitchen unit lights drives me demented.

AddToBasket · 04/12/2016 07:52

On a previous kitchen an architect encouraged us to put loads of down lighters in the ceiling to form a 'light square'.

The problem was that we didn't actually need that much light so never got round to changing them when they blew and it always just looked a bit shit.
