Removing marble hearth

We are finally getting a wood burner put into the lounge (hurray!) and have had the chimney sweep out this morning to remove the gas liner in the chimney.

We are now left with a hole to clear, and a marble surround that needs to go. The white wooden surround needs to go as well. DP is going to do this to save money, and then the sweep will come back to install the stove once we've picked one.

What's the best way to go about getting rid of the marble? Just chisel it away? How is the wooden surround likely to be held on? And what about the marble bit on the floor, what is likely to be under that?

And also, while I'm here, I'm happy to hear suggestions on how to surround the new stove once it's in - we'll be doing that ourselves too probably.

There should be a concrete sub-hearth under the marble. The marble is probably cemented onto it. The wooden surround is likely to be screwed into the wall on either side. If you are lucky, the fixings will be under the wallpaper; they're usually towards the top. If you are unlucky, they've been plastered over.
