Only front of house double glazed-why?

I have seen a house for sale which I want to put an offer in on. It is a 3 bed Victorian terraced house with bay windows and high ceilings. Only the front rooms with bay windows in have been double glazed with wooden glazing. Why not the rest of the house (lots of windows!)? I have seen the same in another house for sale. Does this mean I can stop worrying that the house will be freezing as maybe the rest of the house is okay?

It might've been done to reduce noise maybe? Does the front of the house face on to a busy road or something like that?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/11/2016 10:43

Traffic noise.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 23/11/2016 10:44

Probably cost. Couldn't afford to do all of them so did the most important ones.

ZoFloMoFo · 23/11/2016 10:46

Noise?
Cost?
The back is south facing so is warmer?

Kidnapped · 23/11/2016 10:48

They could probably only afford to replace the front ones at the time.

Or maybe the other windows were in reasonably good condition and they didn't want to change them just yet.

And no, I don't think you can conclude that the house is warm from that. It could still be freezing.

We had this in our current house. Some windows had been upgraded, some hadn't. And I can confirm that this does not mean the house will not be freezing. Replacing the remaining single glazed windows was one of the first things we did (as well as upgrading loft insulation and adding cavity wall insulation).

I bought a house like that - back faced south so old wooden windows destroyed by UV. We did the front a few years later, with a double glazing firm who lived up to everything you hear...

It will be cost. Which way does the house face?

PigletJohn · 23/11/2016 12:13

Wooden DG is relatively expensive, so they were presumably anxious to get the best that would be in keeping with the house.

By renovating the front first they have done the public face of the house, for appearance I expect, and it will also reduce traffic noise.

If you like the quality of the new windows, ask who did them and perhaps you can do the others later.

I lived in a place once which only had double glazing in one back bedroom which I thought was odd. I moved in during Summer. When winter arrived I realised that the weather at the back was much worse than at the front due to the positioning of the surrounding buildings, wind blew all the rain, sleet and snow directly at that window, hardly anything at the front.

user1470997562 · 23/11/2016 21:50

Cost. Somebody else put them in, they've had no money to do the back.

rollonthesummer · 23/11/2016 21:57

Cost!

YelloDraw · 23/11/2016 22:00

Most likely cost. Potentially noise.

Probably the living room and the main bedroom are at the front so they did that side.

My house had one window at the back not done which I did when I moved in. Funny because every other window was done but that was the spare room so I guess they saved £800 by not doing it!

I suspect the single glazed rooms will be much colder!! Ours certainly was. My mum was telling me the other day it used to be very common for people to get a couple of windows done at a time, because DG was so expensive. Still is if you are committed to using some nationally advertised brands, and fail to haggle properly...

Janeyspamey · 25/11/2016 23:35

We've got this in our mid terrace property. It does mean that the back rooms are colder but they have lovely original sash windows, which was one of the things that appealed to us when we bought the house
