Apparently I can't have white walls everywhere HELP

Doing up an Edwardian terraced house. Our colour themes throughout are grey/white/black/neutral and I had thought for ease that we should paint everywhere white. Apparently this will make North East facing rooms feel cold? The house faces west so the back bedrooms and kitchen and dining room don't get light after lunch time basically.

What colours would you suggest would give lightness and brightness but not coolness and in the dining room - should we have a dark colour? It's very dark atm and we want to brighten it up. Got a huge mirror, any other tips would be gratefully received. Thank you

To the last poster- A good place to buy art directly from artists is Instagram. Lots of lovely artworks, all kinds. Search some tags like #abstractartforsale #artforsale and colours you like. You can just contact artists. Etsy is good too.

I love all white houses. My last house was all white and it made me so happy. I think with the right accessories and wall hangings white rooms look so stylish.

Current house has rooms painted in colours. I live with it. Wink

I knew someone with a Victorian house where it was all white, with green axminster carpet everywhere. Paintings on the walls and patchwork quilts on the beds, rugs and lovely curtains.

You could paint it all white, then add walls of colour or wallpaper later, if you found you weren't so keen. White is so much easier to paint over. If you need to paint one wall if it gets tatty, then it is easy too.

Thank you for the art tip!

Just go for lovely, warm, chalky F&B whites, makes all the difference.

Our entire house is painted in antique white, top to bottom. I think it looks good with our vaguely mid century and scandi style stuff and (even better) is pretty forgiving of primary coloured toys and assorted tat. No point in us having a beautifully coordinated and accessorised colour scheme if it's going to be ruined by a pile of Duplo in the corner. And you only need one tin of paint in the cellar for patching up. Win.

I have a north-east facing room that backs onto my garden painted in Jasmine White - it works well because it has a slightly greenish tinge to it that picks up the colours of the leaves outside.

I don't think there are any rules about which whites will work with which aspect - this is too simple - it depends on things like the quality of light. In East Anglia where my parents live, north-east facing rooms have an almost blue-like quality at times (and the sky is much lighter blue), whereas in the middle of the country, the light is yellower and the sky darker.

As PPs have said, it also really depends on the colour of your furnishings.

Thanks all! Looking at different whites for different rooms. Have bought a Carrara marble Victorian fireplace (original!) for the front room and I am wondering if grey on the hearth/alcove wall behind it would make it pop and then white on the other three walls. This is the fireplace if anyone has any views - but we aren't having the log burner inside its a black cast iron fire with black hearth so it will look more like (dear god I hope so) this beautiful one from Pinterest Smile

Yes you can, whenever I sell a house I paint the whole lot white.

MargotLovedTom · 09/10/2016 09:46

The fireplace on the left doesn't look white to me - more light grey? If you're worried about a room looking cold then I wouldn't use grey on the wall you mentioned.

foodiefil · 09/10/2016 09:52

The front room is south facing where the fireplace will be. The fireplace is marble also I think, in the second pic.

Personally I dislike feature walls. I imagine you could find a suitable white to bring out the fireplace

Oblomov16 · 09/10/2016 10:29

All white here too. Love it.

foodiefil · 09/10/2016 10:32

I love all white. That way, if you want to change a colour scheme, you just buy a few new acccessories. It's also easy to reprint regularly yourself.

Dulux White Chiffon - not cold at all. It is hard to tell that it's warm till you get a tester pot.
