wooden floor in bedroom - options? (pic included)

I am currently redoing my bedroom. The original idea was to have new carpets but after ripping out the old one I now really like the wooden floor look. The boards are not in the best condition and it wouldn't be a simple sand and varnish job. What are my options? I hate laminate flooring. Could anything else be put over the existing boards? Or is this all a bad idea and I should just get a nice fluffy carpet?

Engineered wood is essentially a block of any old crappy wood with a thick veneer on the top. As such you can't sand it down more than about 3 times which isn't great if it gets scratched or stained

How about filling the gaps in as well? That will keep the drought (sp ?) out. We got this done by a professional along with sanding and varnishing. Love the result and feels great underfoot. Your floorboards look like they are in good nick! Have a look here for inspiration www.sandedfloors.co.uk, they did our floors.

Definitely boards - I love them.

For those that have rugs under the bed, does it not feel like a waste of money to buy a massive rug that's mostly hidden?

That's not exactly what engineered wood is, fluffikins. It's built up of alternating layers of wood that are arranged perpendicularly so they're structurally much more stable than solid wood, with a layer of hardwood on top (that can vary in thickness - obviously more expensive if thicker). It doesn't warp with moisture or underfloor heating, and it should last decades.

I have a wooden floors in all our bedrooms , some with rugs and some without . It's not cold or noisy. We did our bedroom first and the kids loved it so much , we ripped up their carpets and sanded their floors too.

Our bedrooms floors are all pine. Our room was already stained dark brown. The kids wanted a lighter look so their floors were white washed ( with watered down white emulsion ) before varnishing .

Your boards look In ok condition to me and I suggest you get a professional in to sand and varnish . It's part of their job to fill gaps, screw down loose boards and repair damage .

It's not messy as they use a machine that sucks up all the dust .

Cel982 all I know is my fil who is a fitter wouldn't let me go near the stuff because I have a dog so it'd need to re-sanded too often and in fact my friend who had engineered put in regrets it hugely because it's scratched, sun bleached in patches and looks awful after two years

NotAMammy, have a look online; loads there. I just googled 'cheap large rugs' and could can get deep pile ones to fit under a bed for as litte as £150.

user1471, yes was thinking of using hard wax oil too. It's mentioned in the blog nannyplums has posted.

IlPorcupino, it's 'blue whale' from the B&Q Valspar range. It's a little more grey than the pic makes it out to be. Love it though.

We sanded and oiled our far from perfect floors with osmo oil (amber tint). They look amazing and aren't cold or noisy.

It was a hard and messy job, but totally worth it.
