New to renting and a bit clueless!

We're selling our home (due to move in a few weeks) but our new house is still being built so we're going to have to rent in the meantime.

I've arranged a few viewings for the weekend but am clueless about what I should be checking or asking beyond how it actually looks iykwim.

Any tips or a wee handy checklist to make sure we're being responsible potential renters and don't get stung? We're in Scotland if that makes any difference to things

Just check potential contracts and see what you are expected to maintain and what your responsibilities would be. Check contract for exit too. Are expected to do a professional deep clean? Some contracts stipulate no candles, no BBQs, etc.

In Scotland, you should not be charged agency fees for renting a property eg signing a lease, inventory checks, referencing, credit checks etc - these should all be borne by the LL.

Your LL should be registered with the local council (you can check). Run for the hills if your LL is not registered.

Be aware of the Repairing Standard - it outlines both your & LL responsibilities for maintaining/repairing the property.

You should also get a TIP ( tenants info pack).

Obviously any deposit should go to one of the relevant schemes - ask which one.
