Gas fires

We need to replace our ancient inset gas fire.
I would like to open up the fireplace and get a gas stove, but not sure if this can be done (we do have a chimney breast and stack). However, I'm told that we will need the chimney lined for a gas stove, which will likely add a few £££ to the job. Does anyone know if this is right?

I understand that if we just get a new inset fire, it will be just a case of replacing it and nothing needs doing to the chimney.

We really like the look of an inglenook with a stove, but I'm not sure it's worth the mess, hassle and expense when it would be much more straightforward to get a new inset fire.

Anyone done anything similar or any advice?

No real advice sorry but it may be worth getting the chimney swept in
between especially if it is easy for things to get into it.

Ok thanks. I wondered about chimney sweep but didn't know if it would be necessary.

We've just replaced our 1970s gas fire. You'll need to get the chimney checked - depending on how long ago the liner was last replaced it'll need doing again (they last about 10-15 years). Should only be a couple of hundred pounds including fitting (maybe more if they need to put scaffolding up).
There are lots of options with fireplaces. We decided not to put an open Victorian fireplace back in as it draws all the heat out of the room through the chimney. Instead we got a high efficiency fire with old fashioned surround and mantle. It has a glass front so you don't lose heat. We love it and definitely recommend it. It cost about £650 I think.
Didn't consider an inglenook with a stove so can't comment on that.

in exactly the same situation. plumber told me yesterday he fitted a new liner couple weeks ago and it cost £250 before labour. Builder said to make the space for the fire would be around £100-£150. We have the gas stove already taken from another room but don't know how old it is (just bought house) and worried about getting all the work done and it failing. I do like the look but wondering if worth all the hassle and expense. However when looking at new inset can't see anything i like for less than £650! and wasn't banking on them being that expensive!

What did you decide in the end?
