Installing a non-Ikea farmhouse sink in Ikea cabinets... help! Anyone done this?

Hi all,

So, after months planning our new kitchen we got to IKEA today and were told that the Domsjo double sink is unavailable for the indefinite future due to supplier issues. Very annoyed as I had specifically checked availability using their online chat service 2 weeks ago! Angry . We can only wait a week or 2 as we're moving in mid-September and there is currently no kitchen at all, so we need a plan B.

We are pretty set on a farmhouse style ceramic sink but I really can't face the thought of researching a whole new kitchen so would prefer to stick with the IKEA cabinets if possible and just stick a different sink in. Ideally we'd like something similar to the domsjo: 2 sinks, no draining board (as we'll have drip-dry cabinets above it), apron/butler front. The Ikea cabinet/gap for the sink is 80cm x 60cm.

So, has anyone succesfully installed a different sink into an Ikea base cabinet ? If so, which style/brand did you use? (We are in Italy not the UK but can find most brands/get them delivered here, though at a less friendly price than the IKEA one of course Sad ). Did you have to adapt the cabinet to fit the sink, and if so how did you do it and was it hard?

Most sinks I've seen so far aren't as deep as the domsjo so we'd be left with a gap between the sink and the tiles - do you think this would be a nightmare and go manky if the worktop was wooden butchers block? I think if the sink is more expensive I'll have to say goodbye to my planned marble worktop...

Hoping that mumsnetters can share their wisdom with me (again) Smile

Drip dry cabinet = plate rack. Sorry, can't help with the sink.

Yes, a plate rack inside a cupboard.

Not under mounted no and we would wipe up but our nanny was notorious for leaving patches of water.

I basically oiled it a lot more around the sink so it was more protected.

I have, but mine is an undermounted sink. We used a standard IKEA cabinet and reinforced it with a frame of 2 by 3s, and (crucially) reinforced the legs of the cabinet too. We got a wooden worktop and oiled it and 3 years on it isn't mouldy and we are not particularly careful. Have re-oiled it once though.

Hi, I'm trying to figure this out for a friend of mine but for the single sink. However in my onlin search I have found the double on for sale on eBay. Not sure if you still need one but if you get this message in time you could have a look now for domsjo sink on eBay. Good luck! I know how frustrating it is, we've placed an order for her kitchen due to arrive mid October we thought we had to collect the sink in person only just realised they are out of stock. Let me know how you get on!
