just found out the neighbours have a turning circle on front lawn

finally found a dream home! detached- check! large garden check! overlooking fields check!

offer accepted check!

we must have been in a daze becos we didnt realise that the tarmac in front of the front door connects to the neighbours drive.. well on the day I thought odd- but nobody said anything.

anyways- turns out they sold the turning circle to the neighbours!

Its right outside the front door! How odd is that! I guess we might see a the odd car or van reversing in there!

They're not supposed to park there.

wwyd? The house needs some work - the price sort of reflects that- but but I'm sort of speechless! walk out of your front door into neighbours reversing?! literally 5 feet from front door! :(

I wouldn't touch it op, there's nothing stopping them parking a caravan right outside your living room window.

I don't understand the rationale behind selling that land to the neighbours. Actually, I don't understand the concept of a "turning circle either.

So that tarmac has nothing to do with the public road? It could have been kept as a driveway but instead it gives the neighbours the right to manoeuvre across it? What would the neighbours do if it didn't belong to them?

So many questions!

But honestly, it's going to piss you off isn't it? It would piss me off. Car lights shining through the front window all the time. People parking there, etc.

I would walk away too. We sold our house recently and moved to a rented house on a big country estate.

No one bothered to tell us that someone had a right of way through our big gate to a barn in our garden, next to where we park our cars.

It is not mentioned in our lease, nor is it on the bit shaded red that is ours on the map that accompanies it.

Apparently these people have had a right of way for 25 years, etc., etc.. It is only used a couple of times a month on average but it annoys me.

We won't stay here beyond next summer - because of that, whereas otherwise we might have stayed here until we found our absolutely perfect home.

Walk away.

No way.

That looks more like a cosy little parking space rather than a typical turning 'circle'
The minute you move in, there will be a big camper van parked there! Why else would they want to buy it! You would be crazy to go ahead.

There is another way of looking at it/addressing it.

If you can determine that they did indeed buy that turning area, you could offer to buy it off them.

However, I would be wary of that even because I could imagine that their historical use of it would be ingrained in them and in reality, how could you stop them from reversing in and then driving off. And if they actually parked there, you'd be forever out there and asking people to move.

Personally the potential for argy bargy would be the thing that would really put me off - that sort of thing can escalate into all sorts of drama.

I'd pull out if it was me, but I'm anti social and it would drive me insane.

I am staggered there is no way I would buy that house the pictures are unbelievable and I'd bollock the ea they knew and parked there to cover it.

That looks like part of the road Hmm

Scrap that. Looking at the last image there is no way I'd touch that with someone else barge pole.

What on earth were they thinking?

I'd do some more research into it before proceeding, if you decide you want to buy as it could cause issues.

We share a drive with another house, they have to drive past our house to get to theirs, and the drive is equally shared lengthways, we own the right and they own the left, if you drew a line down the middle of the drive; in theory this means that we both have equal access and it's agreed that we can drive on each other's half to access our own properties.

However, there's a turning circle belonging to next door, right opposite our house. Previous neighbours offered us use of it for parking when we had visitors, which we thought was neighbourly and thoughtful. Current neighbours absolutely will not consider us using the turning circle under any circumstances; we think they're a bit unreasonable but it's on their land and therefore we respect their wishes.

Thankfully, they don't park in it either, as that would be an eyesore for us

Nope, nopety nope, no way in hell. Get out now. Estate agent tried to hide this gem by parking there and thus stopping the caravan no doubt 😁

It's the oddest turning circle ever.

From the Arial photo Looks like it completely like it used to be the front garden of the house you're buying. So possibly part of the lawn and im guessing was sold to the neighbours who then turned it into s turning circle.

As a turning circle it would be of no benefit to the house you're buying.

I suppose the good point is that your neighbours need it as a turning circle so they're very unlikely to stick a caravan in it.

Palomb · 21/08/2016 21:09

Why do they need a turning circle? Don't most people manage to reverse of their drives?

Report
CotswoldStrife · 21/08/2016 21:15

You are not supposed to reverse on to a road - but that is far too close to the house (even though it looks to have a lot of land on the other side and a fab garden) but that loss of the front garden would make me walk away OP.

yes it definitely was part of the original front garden, I'm going to grill the agent at 9:01 am tomorrow!

going to speculate that the original owner sold the land or built the house thats squeezed in there?

This house is in a bit of a state inside, was a rental until last week and smells of cat pee in the front room!

Actually the house was up for sale mid June and was snapped up fast but the sale fell thru - the chain broke allegedly.

I am so gutted this is the 8th place we have gone for in 5 months!

Agree the use it as a parking space but are calling it a turning circle. Can't see how use it to turn would really help them, their own drive is big enough.
