Do you have lino on your landing?

And if so are you happy with it? And how does it work with the top of the stairs?

We have just had marmoleum fitted in our kitchen and I LOVE it. So didn't expect to like it as much as I do. It looks beautiful and really practical.

It is really important to have it laid by a specialist fitter. Our fitter was great but he did say it is a niche product and we had chosen a block colour which he said was niche within niche! It tends to come with a mottled or smoky effect which I really didn't like but we have it a lovely block colour and it is fab. We do have a join but it has been done really well but you wouldn't need that in your hall way. Very easy to clean although I do seem to spend a lot of time sweeping it but it feels quite therapeutic and it's the kids crumbs that I am sweeping so again not some thing you would have in your hallway hopefully!

Or you could look at rubber although when I did some research on here there were some very strong reactions to the idea of rubber flooring. Folk saying it was a nightmare to clean and just generally looked horrible. I am definitely a convert to Lino, it is due a revival Grin

That's really good to hear Bear! After the hell of pulling up many ancient layers of lino from our kitchen I never thought I'd be considering it, but I saw some block colour ones and liked the effect. Though I'm thinking about the landing not the hallway and not sure if that is possible because of the stairs.

Ahh, just read your posts properly and see that you are talking about the stairs also. Not sure what you do with them in you don't want a carpet runner, other than leave them bare, although I love photo 2 with the treads. With regard your floorboards, we had the same issue with our downstairs hall, floorboards not great, but DP spent a day or so filling the gaps and then we painted them, they look brilliant, and the paint has worn really well, used a f & b floor paint and primer. So you could just try that, got to be more economical than having them replaced or putting engineered wood down.

What did your DP use to fill the gaps - those splinters of wood? Maybe we should try. I used the squirty stuff between some boards in the bedrooms and it left an uneven surface, fine to fill gaps but not very attractive if you look closely.

We are happy to leave the stairs bare - the problem is the top of the stairs where they meet the landing. I can't visualise how something like lino could end. So I mean carpet rolls over the top step, and engineered wood could have some kind of nose, but I don't know about a lower, softer material like lino (or even cork). But if we just improve the boards that wouldn't be an issue Smile

Not sure if that will work but if not Google 'wood slithers fill floorboards' on You tube. You can get the wood really cheaply on eBay but he says tell Spring it is a lot of work. I don't remember that funnily enough, I seem to remember that he quite enjoyed doing it, but then he is quite fastidious and methodical so it was the kind of DIY that suited him I think. I just bodge everything!

That's super helpful, thanks! I'll suggest that DP does this one Grin

If you went with lino you can get a metal edge to go over the top step, usually used on commercial stairs i think. We have one as have lino in our hall and kitchen, but stairs going down to our lounge. We have had to have carpet on the stairs though as kids sound like elephants otherwise!
