Lincrusta Advice

Hey everyone
I'm thinking of installing lincrusta below a dado in my Victorian hallway but it's proving to be expensive via the professional route... It's working out at labour costs of 300 a day for 10 days which is not including materials and wallpaper is usually priced at 160 per roll.

I think it is too expensive for the house anyway but does anyone have any experience of self installing as I know a few handy men and to be honest I would be happy to try myself anyway

Is it possible or too fiddly and needing a professional... Also anyway with experience of wall panelling too

Use an anaglypta type alternative instead? That would be like standard wall papering.

My dad did his own in more than one house - it is perfect and he is just an ordinary DIYer type not an expert DIYer.

You have to buy special glue, you probably know that anyway.

He is just an ordinary sort of chap Keeping, all his DIY would have been born out of saving money with three kids to pay for.

My Mum used to do all the wallpapering so whilst he has done things like tiling, a bit of plumbing he generally did things like painting the stairs (Mum did everything she could manage) and gardening.

It can't be that hard, matching the pattern and glueing it on below the dado. I would have a go at it (in fact I have got a roll that Dad had left over), I was going to use it in the tiny downstairs hallway but we moved.

I would look at the Lincrusta page for advice - I think it is fabulous stuff, do it once and live with it forever. I had some original stuff in an Edwardian house, the gloss paint was probably thicker than the Lincrusta.

Following with interest as had a similar question. I looked on the Lincrusta website and there is a find an installer page.... Not many around. There is a course you can do apparently!!

I've done it. Easier than normal wallpapering and several years later still looks good

How big is your hallway? I can't see how it would take 10 days effort.

We have a lincrusta frieze which is original to the house. We had to replace a couple of sections after rewiring. Our usual decorator did it - said it was slightly more difficult than standard wallpaper, just because it's so heavy, but not a big deal. I don't see why it couldn't be done DIY.

Get more glue than you think you'll need! It doesn't seem to go as far as they claim...
