Hob or sink on the island unit?

Planning our new kitchen but cant decide what to put on the island unit... hob or sink?

Originally thought hob thinking plumbing would be easier but when looking online lots seem to have the sink on the Island.

What do you have?

Hob all day long, socialising while cooking vs socialising when washing up....... I know what I'd choose x

As a a plumber/gas engineer I say hob. Easier to install, cheaper to repair.

I'm planning to have an L shaped island with one in either end

Yes - good idea with the plug - have one of those tower plug thingies that you can push up and down.

Hob looks much more streamlined than a sink.

Yes, hob. Makes cooking fun/sociable. Kids/friends often sit at stools on other side of the island while I cook. Wdn't be quite the same with a sink!

We're having the sink in the island. We already have an island unit (with just a worktop) but changing kitchen layout and having bigger island. We use the island an awful lot with the children (3 primary aged) and wouldn't want them anywhere near the hob. I also wouldn't want guests sitting at the island if I was cooking (I'm too messy / not a good enough cook!!). We also don't generate much sink washing up, it all goes in the dishwasher so not concerned about washing up collecting in the sink on the island. If we'd have had the hob on the island, we'd have had to have one of those overhead extraction fans - we wanted to have a clear view of the garden as we came into the house / hall then entered kitchen and an extractor in the middle of the room would have obscured that.

Think it comes down to personal choice and how you use your kitchen.

Sink. Ours is off centre and leaves lots of room for a nice congregating/serving area. Have you considered extractor fan if you decide on hob? I'd hate the hob in the centre.

But have two sinks in the kitchen, one on island (clean sink for prep) and one in front of window (dirty sink for washing up).

Have hob somewhere at 90 degrees to where you want to socialise. Stirring saucepans sideways is easy, prep sideways leads to trimmed fingers.

We have a flat extractor so it doesn't obscure anything, it's brilliant! Oh and hob.

I think hob is a bit too dangerous in terms of spillage and splashing from hot fat. Under mounted sink and stone top can be very streamlined and makes you clear the washing up that much quicker!!

This under mounted sink is about as big as you can get in a 60cm base unit

We have a sink in ours. Works well.

Sink. We have the hob in the back wall and the island creates a natural Barrier for the children

We had this dilemma and opted for hob. We also had an extractor fitted flush to the ceiling. Hob is much more sociable, I love to cook whilst people sit the other side. I don't regret going for the hob at all.
