Do rooms need to be completely empty for new carpet to be laid?

Or can heavy items be moved from one side to another as appropriate? I imagine I am being naive!

@Floggingmolly

Because some furniture is extremely heavy, Alice? There's a wardrobe in one of our rooms that literally needs to be taken apart in order to move it; it's a two / three man job.
@bakemaz is right if it is heavy for two to three man as quoted above by OP , how do you expect a single fitter or even two to shift it.

I think you will have to take the wardrobe apart. Or carpet around it! If you cannot lift it, don’t expect the fitters to. That’s the rule we live by. We have always found fitters ok with moving around movable furniture, eg beds, but we strip off mattresses to make it easier. I think you have to take very heavy pieces apart or be around to help the fitters. You must tell them about the issue though. They won’t like surprises!

I think you can pay extra at John Lewis for furniture moving, we did for two big sofas. Iirc it was something we discussed when they came round to measure up and it went on the quote.

@Bakermaz

We are carpet fitters Not removal guys It's to much fuss for you to move them but expect fitters to do this So if they put there backs out For weeks That's fine is it because the person that wanted the carpet fitted could not be bothered to move it Would you pay this guy for 2 weeks for being off work with bad back
Because anything within reason that helps the client would contribute to a more successful business. It's fair for customers to presume that a carpet fitting business would hire fitters who are fit enough and trained to lift heavy materials in order to do the job.
FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 01/05/2021 10:58

I agreed with our carpet fitters beforehand what we would move and what we would leave. All the surfaces were cleared and any small furniture (bedside tables, toy chests etc) put into the loft. They agreed that dressers, beds and a big desk could stay as long as they were emptied out so not as heavy. They came in with 3 guys moved everything out of the master into DS room, removed the old carpet and fitted new then did the same in DS room. All furniture was put back in place over the new carpet when they were done.

I would say, move and dismantle what you can.
Empty out what you can't.
Tell the person you are ordering from what the room situation will be on the day of fitting.
That way, if they need to have extra muscle in place on the day, they can account for this beforehand and charge accordingly.
No surprises - everyone happy.

Maybe the op is ready to replace them again Grin

Just realised this is a zombie thread. 🤦🏻‍♀️

DappledThings · 01/05/2021 17:14

I can't believe this is a twice-revived zombie about carpet fitting and yet it isn't THAT thread about carpet fitting.

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 01/05/2021 23:54

I feel like I've missed the boat twice now! What is THAT thread about carpet fitting then?

SpeakingFranglais · 02/05/2021 06:01

.I have on,y ever left a sofa in a room but took all the cushions off it and out of the room. The fitter were fine with that as the base was light.

A wardrobe may be ok if you ask, offer to move it around as they work and empty it completely.
