Hi.im in Bicester ,far to near Bicester village...tentatively thinking of moving the brood somewhere where house prices are much cheaper and with more going on than just designer shops, that even if I could fit in to the clothes ,I couldn't afford...sooo any ideas where in the uk is cheaper than here, and a nice place to raise a family....I'm sick of having a whopping great mortgage for a poky house.

I second South Wales near Cardiff. Beaches, city, Brecon beacons and cheap houses and only a couple of hours from London.

Another vote for the Wirral here lovely place to live and so close to Liverpool Chester north wales. Beautiful beaches and countryside. Here is a house I found which is in a great area with lots of amenities.
Storeton Road, Prenton

South Wales. More expensive the close you are to Cardiff but still within 30 minutes the house prices plummet. You have it all on your doorstep. Beautiful countryside, beautiful beaches and coastline and a major vibrant city that beats Oxford for shopping and entertainment 10 X over at least.

North Scotland offers similar but provides less of city life. Depends what you want.

traceyed1 · 07/05/2016 09:17

Yes petal you must visit the city it's fab! Wirral is great because you are close enough to the city but the house prices are so much lower. You get far more for your money over here. We have family in Liverpool and they can't believe the prices we pay on the Wirral compared to Liverpool prices.

NapoleonsNose · 07/05/2016 09:37

West Cornwall, particularly around the Redruth and Camborne area. Used to be very deprived and certainly still has some 'less than nice areas'. However, the area has had loads of European funding and is definitely on the up. The main traninline will get you into Paddington in around 4.5 hours, Newquay airport has thrice daily flights into Gatwick. You are surrounded by dramatic landscape and beautiful beaches, what's not to like?

MiniMover · 07/05/2016 09:42

Wow, why is the Wirral so cheap? What keeps the house prices so low? Is commuting awful? That house but just along the M62 to where we used to live would have cost around 800k!

dimots · 07/05/2016 09:55

Preston isn't really the nice bit of the Wirral - too near Birkenhead. Heswall is nice, tho a bit more expensive. Parts of Liverpool are lovely and Liverpool is very good for facilities - theatre etc. Some parts are rough though - you need to go and visit, look around and talk to the locals - they will tell you where to look.

namechangedtoday15 · 07/05/2016 10:06

minimover I think I might live close to where you left. Your "Hunter wellies" comment struck a chord!!

I was going to suggest parts of Derbyshire if you want a more rural feel, closer to Sheffield perhaps if you more suburbia.

traceyed1 · 07/05/2016 11:14

Dimots Prenton isn't the nicest part of Wirral but it is much better for amenities and being very close to motorway and tunnel for Liverpool.

Middleclassmumnetter · 07/05/2016 12:27

Wirral

Avoid:
Birkenhead/tranmere/Rock ferry/new ferry/seacombe/woodchurch/beechwood estate/noctorum/leasowe

Ok if right street/parts of: Wallasey, Moreton, Upton, prenton, oxton (village only)

Mostly very Nice: Heswall, hoylake, west kirby, meols, Greasby, Pensby, higher Bebington, Eastham

Extremely posh: caldy, lower Heswall, Gayton

Obviously house prices in these areas reflect this.

Prenton is officially the CH43 postcode which is vast and includes many areas that aren't actually prenton, some nice some not. Right move will record anywhere ch43 as Prenton regardless.

It's extremely easy to commute to Liverpool by train bus ferry, tunnel and motorway to Chester.

Namechanged, I lived in big town W next to little posher town AE.

namechangedtoday15 · 07/05/2016 19:14

I know where you mean - we're a bit further towards Manchester in H. I also don't have Hunters ☺

MiniMover · 07/05/2016 20:26

Ah yes, I think they're very similar in terms of demographics, house prices and showy wellies! Grin

gingerbreadmanm · 07/05/2016 20:32

North east? Anywhere close to boro or darlington?

Yarm. Stokesley. Great Ayton. Kirklevington. Coulby Newham. Wynyard.

Probs a lot of places to be avoided in those places as well though.

dotdotdotmustdash · 07/05/2016 22:56

Kirkcaldy in Fife, about 15 miles from where I live. It has decent High Street and retail park and plenty of activities.
