Restoring 60s wood sideboard. What product?

I've just bought a 60s solid wood sideboard from a charity shop. It's in pretty good condition but the wood is slightly faded and there are a couple of cup rings on the top. Any suggestions for a good product that I can use to bring the wood back to life and possibly even get the marks out?

If it's solid wood, get a power sander on it, then finish with Danish oil in the colour of your choice.

If it's veneer, try a darker oil to cover the cup marks.

What makes you think it is solid?

I'm doubting myself now. I'm picking it up tomorrow so can't check until then. It might be veneer.

If it is 1960s then it's highly unlikely it's solid - even the loveliest Danish modern pieces are usually veneered. Unless you are certain it's solid don't go anywhere near it with a sander or even sandpaper! Veneer can be ultra fine and if you lift it it's ruined. I used to work for a mid-century furniture dealer and we used tinted wax (Mylands if I remember correctly) applied with very fine wire wool (00 or 000) This will clean it and also go some way to masking cup rings - not usually possibly to completely remove them. Finish with a good spray polish - and continue to polish regularly to maintain.

That's great info Starman thank you. I think you're right, it must be veneer. I'll try the wire wool rather than do any sanding.
