Teeny tiny hallway - can you share ideas with me?

Hello,

we have a reasonably big flat which is lovely, but the hallway is teensy as it's been converted from one house into two flats. We at least have our own front door, but I am struggling with where to store coats, shoes, that sort of thing - we have done away with the pushchair thankfully as he won't go in it any more, so that solves one problem!

I'd be really glad if anyone has any nice images they could post or link to, or ideas for what can be done. The people before us had some Ikea shoe cupboard things, but my children never put their shoes away and I don't think my rigger boots would fit in them anyway!

This is the hall, complete with shoes etc, as it is this morning...I haven't tidied up yet!! Blush Oh and we are yet to decorate...

Thank you

Or create a proper hall storage area inside the flat in a corner of the room closest to where you come in?
That might be a better bet perhaps and keep the hall clear?

That hall in the pix is a lot wider though, 220. IT has a window by the front door so about 400mm wider and it makes all the difference. I would keep the hall clear and use a wardrobe elsewhere. I don't think any piece of furniture will work, sadly. My DSis's house is identical.

We have a very narrow hall too, so after years of it looking a mess we took everything out of there. I really couldn't be bothered with having to police a "only one coat and one pair of shoes allowed" so decided nothing was allowed.
We put hooks on the back of the dds bedroom doors, so their coats go in there. Dh and I put ours in the utility room which is very small

All shoes go in the bedrooms, in one of those under the bed storage boxes with wheels, so it's easy to get in and out.

It works really well and I wish we'd done it years ago.

Sounds mean to say but not one of our houses at any age of child has had coat etc storage at entrance/hall it was all taken to rooms; just means changing the way you do things then you would have a welcoming pared back hall (never had rigger boots though! Leave in work van?)

Not sure this helps, but I dream about doing something like this

Thank you for all the ideas, I really appreciate it.

I do think that we have to seriously limit what we keep in there, but I'm not sure taking everything to rooms would work - this street gets a fair bit of dog poo and the shoes off rule came about due to it being trodden up the stairs several times Sad

So shoes have to stay down there, unless they are the sort we don't wear much.

I'm beginning to think that having the shoes neatly lined up on the floor would actually be better than having a rack. It would need to be such a narrow rack that it would be pointless as they would just fall off - except the ones from Ikea that store shoes vertically, the one they had before us was 22cm deep. I'm still wondering if that's worth getting again - though despite the postage being 7.50 on the one linked to (wow! I never knew! may order more stuff in that case) it's still £35 on the bigger ones.

I think I'll wait till I have a proper order together and then go for it.

Meanwhile we will just try and keep to a minimum of stuff. This is our floor plan - as you can see, their bedrooms are right at the top, and there's literally nowhere else to store coats and shoes unless they went in my bedroom or the living room.

There is a tiny space at the top of the first stairs, and I already have some coat hooks there too, but shoes are just a tripping hazard.

So we will just have to go minimalist!

I'm glad I'm not alone and hope some of the suggestions will help others too.

this is the cabinet that was there before. It's actually really nice I think. As long as they would USE it!

Argos £12.99, you could paint it white.

We have a small hall and lots of shoes (mostly mine Blush) and I prefer them taken off in the hall for cleanliness reasons too. My advice is whatever shoe storage you go for, get it either opaque/ covered or with a lid.

A nice box or narrow chest with a lid looks better than open shelves with eleventy million haphazard shoes on display, IMO anyway.

We have £3 boxes from IKEA with a lid, one each in a row. It looks nice.

Now if I could sort out the muddy trainers and football boots in a heap at the back door...Grin

Thise boxes are a nice, clean idea Purple

We went with cubbyholes as the best compromise between hiding them and keeping it really easy so there was no excuse for failing to put them away. Lids didn't go back on boxes in this house!!

PrimalLass · 26/02/2016 16:24

These are only 17cm deep. Could you fit one in and still get up the hall?

Maybe get the shoe cabinet for adult shoes and line the DCs shoes up next to it (further from the door so not the first thing you see when you get in).
Then add hooks above for coats/hats etc.
Or simply have two coat racks/hooks side by side, with boot trays on the floor undereath for all shoes, which can be washed if dog poo is an issue (nasty).
This works quite well

I think you could also stack two of the cabinets I posted. Kids shoes in the bottom, adult shows in the top.
