Replacing windows in period house

I'm looking for some advice on what sort of window company to pick for this task. All the windows in our house need doing, but realistically we will only be able to afford to do 2-3 at a time. The house is a detached 1920s property with (currently) leaded single-glazed casement windows. We want to get double glazing without the lead. It's only the casements that need replacing.

We had a local window specialist come to quote, he seemed nice and reliable but quite expensive (£1.5k-£2k a window not including painting). I am wondering is it worth getting an Everest or an Anglian to quote, as they might be cheaper? Economies of scale, etc?

Try getting some more quotes from other smaller local companies. Their after sales service will be much better than the big companies and they can be just as competitive. Overall it will be cheaper to get as many windows done at once as you can rather than 2 or 3 at a time.

One of my friends lives in a period house and had to apply for planning permission to replace her windows. It might be an idea for you to check that out.

Thanks. I did wonder about planning. When you say it's cheaper to do more at once, is that because they should offer you better prices for more? This guy didn't.
