Grr... Valspar

I asked Valspar at my local B&Q to colour match F&B Strong White. Got a test pot, happy with the colour so went back to B&Q (different store as visiting family) and asked them to make up 5L. I showed them the test pot, so they had the exact formula, but when it came out it was dark brown! They pointed this out and made up another 5L to their own formula. Now that I've got it home, it's different again. Weirdly pink.

My local store won't take it back as they didn't mix it and the other one is 40mile round trip. Do you think I've got any comeback? I understand they can't guarantee an exact match to other brands but I'm out 5L of paint because they can't match their own flipping test pot!

no problem,i do hate it when people are mis-informed or things not explained correctly..like i said once i save a custom colour even if it just a tester pot,i do tell customers that computers are not interlinked,it does cause some issue's with customers, but it not been too bad.atleast we can save colours etc, with the dulux systems we had we could never SAVE anything

I need to vent somewhere.
Two weeks ago I walked into B&Q to buy Dulux paint to paint our new home - as per my painter's instructions. The salesman told me that the Valspar paint was a far superior product and that the bonus was that it is marginally cheaper.
I wasn't convinced and was leaning towards buying the Dulux... until I saw the signs at the Valspar paint area with Mumsnet all over it.
That pushed me over and so I bought the Valspar paint.
Two weeks later... we have painted the house.
I made a chicken soup in the kitchen and guess what?

My newly painted wall (Valspar Kitchen and Bathroom) has bubbled and melted in places near the stove.
To say I am horrified is an understatement.
All the walls have needed an extra coat of paint.
All window and door frames have needed at least two coats more than usual.
I've used two highly recommended painters and both have separately said this is not a good product.
So I'm just wondering how a great group like Mumsnet can let their name be plastered all over a product which is definitely not up to scratch?
It's not Mumsnet's fault I bought a poor paint but the endorsement certainly helped sway my choice.
The end result is we will have to repaint our home in a year or two instead of five years.
This was a very expensive mistake.
To anyone out there about to buy Valspar... Don't!

Valspar is fantastic paint, my whole house is done in it after the universal recommendation of several decorators.

They've obviously made a mistake this time. Just complain and get your money back.

WellErrr · 03/05/2016 09:02

Did mine two years ago though - I really hope they haven't changed it as mine is genuinely great.

Ilovenannyplum · 03/05/2016 09:04

I've just painted my kitchen in a valspar paint, we had it colour matched to our wedding invitations because we love the colour (Blush)

I have to say I was quite impressed with it, colour was perfect and it's gone up on the wall really well

KittyKrap · 03/05/2016 09:08

Fuckity bollocks.
We bought Valspar because of all the HUGE 'MN recommended' signs everywhere. Even DH who thinks MN is only about women drinking gin and moaning about their husbands, pointed them out.

So we bought the primer mix one in dark purple.
And it's streaky. After three coats. Bastards.

I'm really surprised by this thread. I never rave about anything really but having had literally hundreds of pounds worth of this stuff I've found it amazing. It all went on in one coat and you can scrub it clean and it looks like new.

I'm starting to worry they've changed it, which would be a shame as I need more!

F**K - just bought Valspar premium. Using it in an old house on old plaster that has been washed down with sugar soap, cracks filled and rubbed down etc. We are using it just on one wall in my daughters bedroom. So far it has gone on well and looking great after 2 coats but worried now!

shovetheholly · 18/05/2016 15:15

I have never heard of half these paints!

What are these reliable 'premium' paints you guys speak of?

whiskyowl · 12/02/2018 10:32

I know this is a zombie thread, but I wanted to update with my own experiences of Valspar.

I was talked out of Dulux Trade diamond matt by my decorator, and onto Valspar premium scrubbable as a 'superior' paint. When they came to do my house, I could see why - the coverage of the Valspar was excellent, meaning they could get away with far fewer coats.

As a paint, though, it is AWFUL. It marks really easily. And I mean REALLY easily. Anything that touches the wall leaves a black mark, fingerprints are black on it. When I tried to clean it using dilute washing up liquid, it left a massive mark -scrubbable my ARSE. It's been on for 2 weeks and it looks awful already.

It's even fallen off the wall where the 'delicate surface' Frogtape was used to mask up for the skirting to be varnished.

I'm actually going to have to get the whole house repainted. It's devastasting.

Please don't touch this paint with a bargepole.

WaterBuffaloDancing · 12/02/2018 10:49

I use it and love it.

It is in bedrooms, dining room, the playroom and the hall. I feel it is better than Dulux which I have been using for years.

I buy the premier stuff and their water based gloss paint too. Can't fault it.

I paint everything myself as I have done for the last 20 years. It is a fabulous paint.

I think I was one of the people sho commented on this thread (or one of the other, numerous threads) saying what terrible paint it is.

Fortunately for us it was just a feature wall so not a massive problem. But such was our experience with it, I will never, ever use it again. It is truly dreadful paint.
