Stamford / Market Deeping, S Lincs

There's a chance we may need to move to the Peterborough area for work. We wouldn't want to live in the city itself. We live in a gorgeous Herts market town at the moment and want to find something similar. Stamford looks perfect but pricey! We also like the look of The Deepings. Primary schools are important. Anyone know these two towns / areas? Thank you!

It's 27 min on the train. 1hr,15mins in the car. There's some nice villages a bit South of newark near the a1.

I know people who commute to Peterborough from long Bennington.

Or how about Sleaford? Great schools, I haven't visited for years so no idea what the town is like but I know people who live there and are happy. 1hr2mins in the car to Peterborough. Lincoln and newark close by for shopping, visiting.

Have fallen in love with a house in Newark and it's right by an outstanding primary.......

I think we'd prefer town rather than village. I'm not the keenest of drivers so don't want to be reliant on a car. I do appreciate all these suggestions by the way. You've all been really helpful.

If you live anywhere around here you will need a car, public transport is dire.

Have a Google about secondary schools for newark they used to have a reputation for not being great. Many people used to try and send their kids to tuxford but not sure of which parts of newark would get in.

1000 plus children leave Newark for secondary every day, apparently and there are buses to 3 grammar schools and comprehensives in Bingham, Southwell and Tuxford. There are also plans for a free school which would be a branch of Toot Hill in Bingham, so things can only get better.

Hhmm. DH has taken against Newark so the beautiful period property I found there is off the list. Sob. Off to Oakham and Stamford tomorrow for a mooch around.

We didn't get to Stamford! We spent a couple of hours in Oakham which we totally loved. We found a lovely cafe called The Castle Cottage. Then headed for Rutland Water which we also fell in love with. We need to get to Stamford too but, right now, we're pretty sold on Oakham. Eeeek! Excited.

I much prefer Oakham to Stamford.

Do you, who? Why? I has expected Oakham to be really quiet from what people wee saying but I thought it had a nice buzz about it. Lovely posr office - very friendly and helpful and the cafe we found was lovely too.

It feels a mix of some of the towns in the Dales and the Lakes to me - two areas I love.

I just find Stamford a bit soulless. But ive never lived there. Granny does though!

That's interesting. I thought that there was more going on over there from what I've seen online. We can't afford as nice a house in Stamford so DH is more keen on Oakham anyway.

There probably is more going on in Stamford with it being bigger. Just when mooching about I don't like the vibe much. Can't put my finger on why and you may well feel differently.

We live in a village just outside Oakham, we've been here just over 10 years now. I prefer Oakham to Stamford, but they're both nice imo. The only problem we've had has been when our children were teens because there was nothing for them to do and they needed to be driven everywhere. Hopefully it might change a bit by the time your's are older.

Glad you've found somewhere you like. Oakham reminds me of Tring. Lots of people would naturally choose Berkhamsted over Tring because it's bigger and livelier but personally I think Tring has a much nicer feel.

I do worry about that Fairycaravan. I grew up in a village and was bored stiff during my teen years, had to be driven everywhere etc. But DD is three and DS is four months so things may change there or we may move somewhere else. Actually I'd have killed to live somewhere as buzzy as Oakham growing up! We had fields and a corner shop to amuse us.

Redcardigan did you see Tring on Location Location Location the other week? A couple chose it over St Albans as got much more for their money.
