A suggestion of mid century design for living room

I moved into a 60s house last year and I am just starting to think about the living room. The living room is in the extension and has cornice, dado rails and a Victorian mantle. I want to give the living room a modern twist on mid century style but this is my first house and I am a complete amateur. To add to the problem I am on a tight budget. I have been scouring eBay, Gumtree and charity shops. Does anyone have any advice or pics of this look in action?

Thanks

We did the same for a dressing table in the bedroom. Think it was the Alex drawers in Ikea. The hairpin legs cost about £30 - and look fab!

We bought a Kaarlstad sofa and bought new 60s style legs for it. Makes a huge difference, people always ask about the sofa and never believe it's ikea.

Do you have a local charity shop selling furniture? Don't forget to look there. It's hit and miss. Our house is 1930's and I got period ercol furniture from our local charity shop for UKP400. That was for a sideboard, a dresser, a table and 4 chairs. They are 1000's new.

Have a look at Swoon. I've got my eye on some stuff there. Mid century with a modern twist.

Personally I'd be careful about adding a retro phone, a starburst clock and that rug if you already have the sideboard and coffee table. It might start to veer towards being a bit novelty.

You got all that Ercol for £400 mrsmortis???????? Envy

Bad form to ask but care to share your location?

I'm surprised the Ercol was that much!

Some of the big charities around here have large furniture shops but they are quite pricey, i saw a lovely sofa ex M&S but well saggy and used and they wanted £150 for it.

I have had some luck with the reclamation shop at the recycling centre and have recently refinished an old wardrobe which i bought for £10. In fact most of the new bits i have bought for this place have come from there inc a lovely leather swivel chair for £7. A fab circular table with a formica top for £4 but you do have to go every week and ours isnt undercover so before the rain!

Hadenough - its a good point but i want them!! But will have def have a think as i dont want novelty. Cant find a starburst clock within my tiny budget anyway. Lack of money might put a halt to my decorating plans. I think before i buy any more bits i need to sell my old corner unit and paint the walls in the living room.

Swoon has fab stuff but beyond my price range. I might have to start saving before i do anything else.

I think the rug might be a bit too much, what about a flokati - they are quite of the time. The real rug co has them 1/2 price at the moment.

I love mid century but it is very popular now and prices have soared.

I have noticed an old house for sale near me with photos on rightmove with a fab sideboard. Might drop them a note!

Re-animating this thread just in case anyone is still around!

Suggestions on a suitable sideboard/cabinet to fit 111cm x 34cm would be most gratefully appreciated. Also struggling with light fittings that aren't in the £800 price bracket for the sitting room and main bedroom.

About to order this bed with 12% discount voucher (AUGUST12)

I LOVE mid century modern furniture!

I've got some great bits in my living room, including an Ercol Windsor coffee table, re-upholstered 1950's sofa in bright purple which i LOVE.

A Seth Thomas starburst clock and a cute teak record cabinet on splayed dansette legs.

I also have started buying and selling this era of furniture and have a fab sideboard and dressing table for sale on eBay.

I think this stuff is so classic and timeless and looks great in a modern or retro home.

OH has pleaded with me to stop buying stuff as I picked up a fab little display cabinet the other day that I was intending to sell but.....
