About to buy a marble island worktop

We're about to order a marble top for our island, to go with white granite for our other work surfaces.
I've gone around the houses with this and looked at having porcelain as an alternative as I really want the look of marble, but the marble is actually less expensive so I'm going for that.
Am I going to regret it, will it stain/mark badly? Any tips on keeping it clean?
It'll be white with some large grey veining so I think you'll pretty much see everything - eeep

hiahia we had a party on Sat night and I think people thought we'd run out of cash, haha!
You should definitely be getting some commission from them!
So glad you mentioned them as I would've just gone for the marble to get it done, and probably regretted it.

I'm back again to bore anyone reading this!
After going to see the Neolith I realised they are sold in 12mm thickness so I'd have to have the material mitred in order to get a 20/24 thickness - I think 12 just looks way too thin for a worktop.
Hiahia, did you compare Neolith to other porcelain's before buying? The quote that I got from a different company for porcelain is less, plus I was right in noticing the slight goldy undertone running through some of the veining in the Neolith, and I didn't notice that with the other porcelain I looked at.
Can you tell I'm driving myself mad with this!

Hi there Ipanema01...

So. I think the 12mm looks ok in a modern kitchen with standard 600mm depth worktops... but could be a bit soso on an island I guess. we mitred to 30mm.
We didn't compare Neolith with anything else, sorry! Originally we were going to get a quartzite but it proved too complicated and then we discovered Neolith in a roundabout way thanks to you heh and went for it.
There is a bit of gold/brown in the Neolith Estatuario, but it really doesn't show much and in our kitchen especially, doesn't shock. I'll take pictures later today or tomorrow morning.

Ipanema what other company did you get a quote from?

Ipanema01 · 10/02/2016 16:58

Thanks hiahia, did you manage to have your issues with the thickness sorted out? the 12mm int eh showroom looked a bit office table to me, I don't think I'd be happy with it. Waiting for them to come back now with a quote for having it mitred...

Ishouldbesolurky I got a quote from Ashlar Mason, they're based in North London. I felt quite confident in them after speaking to the guy in the workshop bit at the back but had my head swayed by Neolith and now I'm not sure if it's the same sort of product or if Neolith is superior. Argh

Thank you Flowers It's such beautiful stuff. We're not at that stage yet but I'm fairly sure we can't afford it but am lusting over it anyway!

Hiahia · 10/02/2016 17:14

our issues were with the fabricator not being so at ease with this newish product, and his awful idea of what customer service is. No issue with the product itself.

hopefully mitred quote not too high!

Blondie78 · 10/11/2016 13:27

This is exactly my problem!!! Would love to know what you went for in the end?

Blondie78 · 10/11/2016 13:53

I am in your shoes right now. The two samples i've seen I thought looked beige and must have been marked incorrectly!

Missdaisy1 · 28/11/2016 12:33

Has it chipped? Does it sound hollow?

Missdaisy1 · 28/11/2016 17:21

How did you get on with the Neolith? Does it chip?

TheTeaFairy · 29/11/2016 15:15

Bumping for updates on the Neolith Smile

Missdaisy1 · 29/11/2016 18:39

When you see a whole slab of Neolith statuario the veining looks much greyer than in small samples

Would love to hear more feedback from anyone who's had one of these Silestone/Neolith marble-like worktops installed 🙂
