Suggest to me places that might meet these requirements... anywhere in the UK!

I have a long term dream/plan to leave London in the next 5-10 years and move somewhere more rural/quiet. I have no family in the UK, and my work can be done anywhere as long as there is a good broadband connection as I would by then be completely self employed. Unlikely to ever have kids so schools are not an issue.

Budget would be around £350k max to become mortgage free and still have savings left.

I'd want at least a 3 bed detached house with a large garden - enough to grow some veg, probably... I prefer older houses to new builds but not that fussy really. A quiet location but not completely isolated. Not in a flood risk area but otherwise I'd like to be close to water (maybe on top of a hill if it's an area that has floods). Would want the house to be somewhere I can look out of the window and see some fields or trees or the sea.

A reasonably "nice" area - I don't necessarily need chi chi coffee shops but I don't want to have to walk past the local drunks on my way to the shops, either. The whole idea would be to escape the grit and noise of London. Somewhere with a bit of a community feel but where people on the whole keep themselves to themselves, probably...

Proximity to a slightly creative town or city would be a bonus.

Obviously this is all hypothetical at the moment but I'd love to have some actual places in mind to perhaps start visiting and checking out.

South hams ( south Devon) lovely villages, super fast broadband, sea moor local creative places esp. Totnes!

Shoreham? Near the sea, near Brighton and not too far from London.

Without hesitation I would say Exeter and its environs. There are too many beautiful houses to list. There are gorgeous villages and stunning houses and Exeter is a great city if you need a bit of toned down buzz from time to time.

Thank you all, I'm enjoying fantasy house shopping!

Budget might be slightly more by the time I'm in the position to leave London. Depends on how well the London housing market treats me and a couple of other things that might or might not happen...

I also came across Balnakeil and its craft village. Probably a bit too drastic as it's very far from everything! But looks lovely.

Another vote for Worcestershire here although I prefer the central/southern bits.

Pretty much anywhere in pembrokeshire

Stroud (Gloucestershire) is lovely. Award winning farmers market, individual shops, lively arts scene, music and comedy at the sub rooms and loads of nice places to eat and drink. Lots of national trust common land and beautiful scenery. Many cottages have spectacular views. You could get a rather nice 3 bed cottage for £30k.

TheExtraGuineaPig · 12/01/2016 16:27

Stroud immediately sprang to mind - and surrounding villages.

mumsnit · 13/01/2016 21:33

Yes to Stroud and surrounding villages! I love Nailsworth - that's where I'd live if it was possible for us to move as it's beautiful countryside, not far into Bristol and has good motorway links. House prices are quite reasonable there too.
