oh now you're asking me to be technical
something about resin and machine and salt taking away the calcium in the water

hOnestly I have looked into the benefits and different types

worth a google if you're interested

Grin. I didn't mean the full sciencey bit... Just; it's attached to the water supply? Sounds like something I need (London crappy water).

ggirl · 17/12/2015 18:04

oh sorry
its attached to the pipes that come off your stop cock

can you drink the softened water?

firewithfire · 17/12/2015 18:05

Heh heh cock.

I would like a water softener. Did you get other work done at the same time? How much did you pay?

ftm123 · 17/12/2015 18:06

and yes, not having to forever clean limescale does sound exciting

ggirl · 17/12/2015 18:12

haven't had it fitted yet
will take a morning I was told

not cheap

whole deal ..£1400

we are renting it for 3 months then paying full price with reduction of 1st 3 months rent so not so painful at this time of year

the overall savings on energy and cleaning etc are worth it in the long run

yes you can drink the softened water

or if you're fussy can have separate tap fitted

Oh god I'm jealous. Your hair and skin will love you for it, you'll notice a huge difference. No more limescaley kettles and that horrible scum over everything!

ggirl · 17/12/2015 19:10

ooh francesca ...have u got one!?

My parents have - I recently moved to a flat which doesn't and I'm always going back home for a sneaky shower!

PigletJohn · 17/12/2015 21:45

once it is flowing, put all your towels through a hot wash. You won't need powder or fabsoft. Watch them foam up as the soap and scale dissolve away and they come out soft.

Take a photo inside your WC cistern today. When you remember, do it again and be astonished.

Photograph your hair today, and do it again in a week.

I hated our water softener, although the pipes undoubtedly loved it.

It has broken and I don't want to replace it as my hair and skin much prefer hard water. No more greasy film on my skin or hair that doesn't feel clean.

ggirl · 18/12/2015 23:12

oh dickydewey..don't rain on my parade Sad Wink

I've got one and it's brilliant. I use much less shower gel/shampoo/soap etc and my horrendous eczema has cleared up beautifully.

TeaStory · 18/12/2015 23:16

I do have a separate non-softened tap for drinking water for me and the pets though.

I love not having limescale everywhere as well!

linspins · 18/12/2015 23:53

Ooo, I'm excited for you. Where I live, the water is so hard it's crunchy. We are about to move house, and I'm seriously thinking of getting a water softener. Wonder if Santa will get me one if I am extra good? Very envious.

ggirl · 19/12/2015 10:40

I've been wanting one for yrs and yrs

stayed with my brother who has soft water for 2 weeks and was completely converted

We've had one fitted and my very fine soft hair isn't liking it at all. It's too soft. Still playing with the adjustments but thinking that perhaps fine hair needs a bit of hardness in the water.

I don't know about the rest. I come from a naturally soft water area so this is a new experience for me.
