How much oil do you use?

Just wondering if people with oil fired central heating could tell me how much oil they use per year/month or whatever?

We seem to have used lots in the short time we've had our new house, I'll tell you what we've used once I see if it is normal or not!

We also have a rayburn (cooking only) which is on idle/low the majority of the time as we aren't living in the house just now because we are in the process of doing it up.

4 litres a day here last time I averaged up, over three years; but we had a new and much less thirsty boiler after the first year. Cooking is on an lpg hob. Oil heating and hot water, heating on about four hours a day Oct-March, h/w for an hour a day.

so yes, you've got a problem oil guzzler!

Thank you everyone!

I think we will just leave things as they are just now until we move in and then I'll start investigating. Over the next 28 days or so I will monitor the oil usage then at some point I'll look out the old camping stove and I'll turn off the Rayburn for 28 days and see what our oil usage is then. I might also check out new boilers, I am guessing that our current boiler is as old as the central heating which was put in in 2002. Is that old for a boiler?

oil boilers last decades but the efficiency is the issue. They also MUST be serviced annually so check if that has been done. The service will give you an idea of how efficient it is.

just to make people feel better about their oil consumption, we have a large (5000sq ft) grade II* listed building, shocking insulation, drafts everywhere, and use around 5000 litres per year (central heating and water) - thermostat never goes above 19 degrees.

thank god oil prices have fallen! (for now)

omg... so that's like £2k/yr on oil. How big is your tank, Kronen?

1800 litres - best part of 3 full tanks per year :/
