'Back kitchen' - WTAF?

The Jan issue of Real Homes has a feature on trends for 2016. Apparently the newest thing is a 'back' kitchen, where you can do, um, all that stuff that needs to be done in actual kitchens.

Here's a quote from the founder of Architect Your Home: "Kitchens have become an integral part of family/living/dining spaces and, as such, have had to become more stylish. While appliances are more elegant than ever, more functional designs can be hidden in a pantry or back kitchen... The danger in creating an extra room like this is that it could undermine the open-plan feel of the kitchen-diner. To avoid this, keep it simple in form and away from views through or out of the house, so as not to interfere with your main space."

Moving between two kitchens every time you cook is not going to be at all annoying, obviously. So I guess over time you do all your kitchen work in the back kitchen, leaving your front version an a very expensive accessory, a fantasy kitchen!

Own up, MNetters, has anybody got a back kitchen? Grin

Oh, the other trend is TWO islands - anyone gone that route? Grin

I thought so loooopo Smile Its funny how memories can just come to life on a thread like this. You mentioned the buttery and I had a vague recollection of hearing the word so googled and up it came as a room like a wine cellar but above stairs so to speak. But it was niggling away at me and I knew, nope thats not it. My grandparents on both sides are Irish. But its funny because Buttery is also a word for a particular bread roll that we have in Scotland. Its a bit like a croissant gone wrong and I assume its from the days of Mary Queen of Scots and her time in France.

I have a huge extended family and though my husband and me are now separated after a lifetime together Im still the one who does all the family do's and what not. I have about 40 for Christmas dinner and about 70 through my house before midday at Eid. But even my children and their families make up a sizeable number though the only reason I live in a house this size after bringing up 5 kids in a 3 bedroom bungalow is because its been built for extended family living for when Im too old to take care of my severely disabled son.

Im a haverin cuddy when I get started Grin

See the back kitchen on floor plan. Just wondering where they work best- near the main kitchen or near the dining room. I'm interested as never heard of one but it sounds very practical !
