Basically that. We live in Stirling area in 2 bed semi. Was gobsmacked at the quote but maybe I am being unrealistic. However our front windows are rotting so we need to get them done.

@ Oreocrumbs - you're a brave woman taking that on...

If I bought the window for £140, I'd then have to

  1. buy the right tools to get the old window out and the new one in -
  2. buy all the sealants and screws and fastenings
  3. be willing and able to re-render the walls for the unavoidable damage I cause removing the old window
  4. get someone willing to give up a whole day to help me - and factor in if I was paying both of us a minimum of £10 hour - £160
  5. get someone willing to give up the following day to help me fix the window when I decide it doesn't look as good as the professionally done ones.
  6. pay to get a proper person in to fix it in the end.

For me, it just wouldn't be worth the pain, anxiety and general stress.

And I have done a lot of DIY so I'm not a total amateur.

We had 4 windows and 3 doors installed perfectly in two days - nearly £5k but worth every penny - I dread to think what it would have cost emotionally if I'd tried it myself.

ps there's a fencing firm near me does it for £80 per bay - includes concrete post, 1 foot high concrete gravel board, and 5 foot high closeboard fence panel.

That's the installed price - you do nothing!

IME it's important to choose a reputable company, several people I've known over the years have been burgled a few weeks after having windows installed.

Seems expensive to me. Unless they're real wood frames.

Ours were done two years ago. 14 windows and two doors. I think we paid about £8500.

Had two quotes from local firms and they both priced similarly.

Two bays and three other windows and a full back door/side window unit for about £3k recently. Fitted by an independent guy, very happy with the job and price. Decent, well installed windows aren't cheap.

Two big windows, composite front door with side unit, two other doors all top of the range and 35 years guarantee £4200, local company with great reviews who did a really good job.

evrybuddy I quite agree! we can borrow the relevant tools etc and dp is a plaster so he can fix the walls when we're done! I'm going to let him crack on. Will have my purse on stand by if it all goes wrong! To be fair he's been in the building trade for 20 years so he isn't completely green and I'm fairly experienced in renovations.... Both window novices though. It will keep him busy for a bit while I get on with the painting!

Sounds a bit on the pricey side.

We paid £5000 for 10 windows (incl one bay) plus a set of French doors.

We did get four quotes, though, and played them off against each other.
