Heating/thermostat confusion - please help

After years of having no thermostat and thinking it was a great idea to get one, I got one installed and now the heating is all over the place. It is a dial that you can move from 10 (lowest) to 30 (highest). Operation was not explained, and now heating comes on all the time whether it is at 10 or 30. It overrides the timer (which is actually all I wanted to work, no one was willing to show me how - believe me I tried over a few winters!) I think I want it removed (thermostat) - can this be done? I now know how to use the timer (typical). To explain, the thermostat dial is in the hall, the heating panel is in the kitchen and the boiler in the loft (not sure if this is relevant, but to provide details). The CH 'whines' when it kicks in - I actually used to find this reassuring, but now it comes on of its own accord, it's actually quite irritating/worrying. You may have guessed I am not a DIY person!

(The click just indicates what the ambient temp is - eg if the stat is set at 20, & the boiler's off, but you're feeling a bit chilly, then if you turn the stat dial up it will click at whatever the temperature is in the air around it - probably 21 or 22 in that situation. Then you can decide whether to leave it up so the boiler will come on, or turn it back down & put a jumper on instead Wink)

Sorry, should have said, mine did also click when the timer was off. It acted like a thermometer.

Thanks Finest! I think I need someone to come and take a look for sure...I do know the whining noises aren't quite right (& worry my neighbour will say something!) - I thought about getting Hive or something similar, but it seems a bit adventurous for someone who won't even buy a microwave with buttons on (dials only!) - once Christmas is out of the way I'll get BG back in...I told DP I wished he was an electrician/plumber/fireman, life would be so much easier Grin

Currently got it on +1 hr so it's nice and toasty now (also have my sofa blanket round me...feeling sleepy 😌) !

Sorry should clarify. Almost all hard wired room stats click when calling for heat. The one pictured only clicks when powered, under normal conditions this should only be when the programmer is switched on. It's not general advice but specific to the thermostat pictured up thread.
