Our house is an old 30s cottage which was doubled in size in the 80s. What were the kitchen and 'back room' are now just one dining room and a separate kitchen was built as part of the extension.
The whole sitting room and dining room (now knocked through) is covered in carpet, I was hoping to pull this up and sand the floorboards instead - however, as a result of how the house was laid out originally, the dining room is half suspended timber floor and half quarry tiles (presumably laid on bare earth). I haven't pulled the carpet far back enough to see exactly how these butt up against each other, but you can feel a very slight ridge where the join would be.
Not sure what to do now.. is there a solution that means I can have wooden floors across the whole area? Budget is a big issue
I think it would look too weird to preserve the two types of floor in that room - even though it would suit the purpose of the room, as only half is really dining space - because it would then go to yet more different types of flooring in the kitchen, back hallway, cloakroom and study. I was planning to use a LVT for the back of the house, with laminate to match as closely as possible to the floorboards for the study (then cover with rugs).
