Hoping the plan attaches. I was appreciate any feed back on my plan. First house, first kitchen of my own.

Colour is slightly off. Door is this one: www.ikea.com/ie/en/products/kitchen-products/cabinet-doors-fronts-panels/bodbyn-door-grey-art-30221043/

What size is your room & where are all the doors/windows

I'll have a play if you want - if seems a shame to waste the window on a dishwasher when you want a breakfast bar there might be a work around

& the water & the cooker point approximately where you have them?

Do you want integrated Fridge Freezer, dishwasher, 800 range cooker - what about ashing machine & dryer?

What have I missed?

HardleyWorthit · 12/11/2015 14:49

We had no problems with integrated washing machine, fridge freezer and oven not from IKEA. Did get the dishwasher from IKEA though as did hear about the problems re: fitting the door to other brands.

TreeBird16 · 12/11/2015 14:50

Sink midway on wall with window. Cooker on top wall, midway. Yes to integrated F/F (70:30) & integrated Microwave, dishwasher. Range is 1000mm.

No washing machine or tumble dryer (separate laundry room (aka - a shed))

When we redid our kitchen, in two houses, we swapped the radiator for a vertical one which solved the problem of them taking up a large area of horizontal workspace. I would worry you don't have enough prep space on your current design. I had to sadly wave goodbye to my dream of a range cooker to keep prep and cupboard space. But then my mum has one and never ever uses one of the ovens, not even at Christmas. She just uses it as an expensive baking tray holder.

Squashybanana · 12/11/2015 14:56

Could you slip a vertical rad to the right of back door on your plan? They can be narrow like this onewww.trueshopping.co.uk/product/Milano_Bora_Anthracite_Vertical_Double_Flat_Panel_Lightweight_Designer_Radiator_1600mm_x_315mm/4889/55240.html

HardleyWorthit · 12/11/2015 14:56

Ooo just to say (I doubt it will be helpful) we have those big drawers in the floor units rather than cupboards and they are the best things EVER! No taking the entire contents of a cupboard out to get to something at the back for me!

Squashybanana · 12/11/2015 14:57

Then you could return the units down that side, maybe narrow deep drawers?

TreeBird16 · 12/11/2015 15:02

And lose the breakfast bar squashy? Does anyone have one? Do you end up ever eating at it? I don't have much experience of them.

We just got new rads but we could change the kitchen one to a vertical without to much drama (hubbie is v. useful)

Hi I have just had the grey bodbyn fitted! It's a tiny dark kitchen that looks on to an old yard. We may move from this house in a couple of years, but kitchen had damp issues and thought we may as well redo now and get the use of it. The fact that it's not our 'forever home' led us to choose all Ikea appliances, oven etc, despite having heard rumblings about the oven not being the greatest. But we did want to do a good job all the same. Honestly, maybe it's because our one was half broken, but oven and hob are fantastic. I am really pleased with all the door knobs and so on, and the benefit is that it does all match in a sleek way.

I would REALLY recommend the home visit from a designer. It's refundable, so if you're definitely going to get a kitchen from there, there's nothing to lose. But obviously they are not as invested as you are in your own kitchen, so what seemed to work well for us was 1) planning what we wanted 2) getting kitchen planner out to ensure it would all work 3) went to ikea and a woman there went through it all with me and did add a small amount of inexpensive improvements. Dishwasher (we have the narrow one, but we didn't have one at all before!) is very good, better than the old bosch we had in previous house.

I was dying to get either patterned floor tiles or terracotta floor tiles (fired earth hexagonal ones) which I think would look lovely with this kitchen (after much pinterest perving) but they are expensive to buy, to fit and seal, plus the thought of having anything that likes to absorb water in this dampish room scared me, so we got very cheap topps tiles ceramic ones - clays cotto - and laid them on the diagonal. It looks surprisingly good, I have had a lot of praise for them from visitors which surprised me slightly.

Def go for the under cupboard lighting on upper cupboards. We also have the glass fronted unit - got the lighting in there, looks fab. Again since we are leaving soonish we got - sorry - very boring cream metro tiles for splash back as quite blah and neutral and cheap but would have loved something like fired earth bahia or menara. However, again they look great.

Shocked how great the new kitchen is - like you, so used to 'making do'. It would really influence me to get an ikea kitchen even in my dream house, though perhaps with naice appliances/tiles/worktops etc.

ledgeoffseason · 12/11/2015 15:24

Also we got the vertical radiator as per squashy's suggestion so that we could have room for the dresser-type glass fronted unit - it is amazing and BOILING.

ledgeoffseason · 12/11/2015 15:26

Sorry I am like one of those annoying people who when you say 'yeah, i'm maybe planning my wedding' go 'LET ME TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT I DID FOR MINE DOWN TO FAVOURS AND CAKE FLAVOUR AND FIRST DANCE AND EVERYTHING' it's all still quite new and I am feeling evangelical. Only six months ago I was putting out pitiful property board pleas to everyone myself!

Katymac · 12/11/2015 15:41

Are the doors 900 & the ceiling height 2.3m?

TreeBird16 · 12/11/2015 16:05

ledge of season - thats brilliant info - the lot of it. I've been googling your tiles - fab! If you get a chance could you upload a photo of your floor against your cabinet?

Katymac - ceileings are 2.4. Doors are 900

Could you put the fridge freezer on an angle between the 2 doors with built in shelves either side (reducing towards each door)?

HereIAm20 · 12/11/2015 16:56

Re your floor. We are about to have our bathroom done and we are having wooden look tiles similar to these but longer/wider.

ledgeoffseason · 12/11/2015 17:05

oooh sorry do you know what I can't - I split my time between two locations for husband's work and I'm not going to be back there until mid-december. But they do look good and topps tiles seem to have very good service re returning/refunding them. Will look on my phone to see if I have a photo.

Only other thing I can tell you is that we got wooden worktops and sealed with i think osmo oil as per people here's suggestion, however it is all quite traditional looking (suits the house) and I think white work tops would be lovely.

poocatcherchampion · 12/11/2015 17:37

Sorry to be late to reply freckled it is a new metod one.

I can't explain why I am not having a problem as I can't envisage what the problem is iyswim

MmeLindor · 13/11/2015 00:24

Are you really stuck on a range cooker? We went for a double sized induction hob, and I'm so glad I did. It doubles up as 'worktop', i.e. I can use it when I'm baking to put stuff on. We don't have a lot of worktop space, and it really helps to have that bit extra.

Re the dishwasher - I'm glad I read that, Freckled. The only thing I'm not keen on in our kitchen is the IKEA dishwasher. Good to know that it was the better option after all!

We bought Neff appliances - only fringe and dishwasher are from IKEA and it was the only think I regretted.

Best thing ever - the huge drawers. If you can fit a couple of them in somewhere.

Is your oven really low or is that just the angle of the photo?

Narp · 13/11/2015 06:49

My advice:

Get drawers, drawers and more drawers (base units), and top-hinged cupboards for the wall units. The only cupboard we got was a tall one for cleaning products and load of other stuff

Also second the induction hob - brilliant (I was always a Gas advocate)

Narp · 13/11/2015 06:52

We looked long and hard at the worktops. We ended up buying their wooden one for our island, but for the run that has a laminate we got Duropal (it's recommended a lot across the internet for its range and durability)

Narp · 13/11/2015 06:54

We had ours fitted by the Ikea-contrcted fitters and they were great. We are also paying in instalments
