the best places to live in the North East?

I'm moving back home after living away for nearly 20 years Grin
We're looking for somewhere rural but not too much in the middle of no where. Thinking South Northumberland or Just south of the Tyne.
Was hoping someone who knows the area could help me out with their suggestions?

Hi! We are considering moving to Prodhoe but have been told there is a lot of crime in the area? Is this still the case? We have two little girls and would like to decide which area to buy a house.

Just bringing up this old thread, does anyone have any thoughts on newbiggin by the sea?

Whickham Sunniside and Rowlands Gill in Gateshead. Great access for Newcastle and A1. Lots of green spaces. Lots to do. Excellent shopping with both Metro Centre and Eldon Square close by. Coast a short drive away.

The coast at newbiggen is lovely and great access to Northumberland, but public transport isn't great and ashington possibly isn't the best town in the north east. Depends on what you're looking for really, you can probably get some amazing value houses there.

Newbiggin is quite nice, but previous poster is right about the busses - they're a bit crappy. Ashington is a bit rough around the edges - if you go a little bit up the coast, Ellington is quite nice, and Amble is lovely.
