wasp nest in the wall

We have a flat which we rent out. Tenant told us there were wasps coming through a couple of cupboards. We went and had a look. Most of the wasps seem to die as soon as they emerge. We taped up problem areas. There is a crack in the rendering between our flat and another, so assume they went in through there originally.

Local pest control company (with very good feedback) said there is nothing you can do if you can't see the nest, which we can't. They told us the wasps will be dying off now, so taping up any exits is all you can do.

Tenant says wasps are stop appearing - think we missed an exit - so dh will go back and tape that one up. Is there anything we can do? She doesn't seem to believe me when I say there is nothing to be done. She is worrying that hundreds of wasps will appear when the areas are untaped, but I told her they'd be dead pretty soon.

If pest control say they can't do anything that's probably true, although I'm surprised they can't put pesticide into the wall cavity.

You're right about them dying off soon though - late summer is when they start to come indoors and die, they're always a bit sleepy so more likely to sting too. We had this for a couple of years in our old flat. Never worked out where the nest was, we reckon maybe the roof of house next door. It just meant keeping any cracks blocked off for a few weeks in late summer/autumn, and we didn't see many wasps really. After two years it stopped, I'm guessing the nest got abandoned.

Sorry I can't be more help but it sounds like you're doing the right thing! Maybe pass an email from pest control onto your tenant as proof. You could also fix that render crack?

Thanks. The render crack is responsibility of the Freeholder as we are only leaseholders. We have told them about it, but they can be very slow to act!

Dh is going to squirt a whole load of wasp stuff in the little hole by the water stopcock, which is where they're coming through and dropping down behind the cupboard. Pest company said they could come put and look and squirt some stuff in, but it really wasn't worth the PS99 call out fee < their words not mine!
