Tiles around a woodburner

Wasn't sure how to title this post but basically I'd like some opinions/advice on the following:

We're having a woodburner fitted into our living room, in a 3 bed semi. The surround will be this limestone one. And the woodburner will be this Charnwood one but in black, without the log stand and with a riven slate hearth.

I'm thinking about tiling the inside bit of the fireplace with some patterned tiles. Sort of Moroccan /Spanish/Moorish type repetitive pattern. Obviously they would have to be vaguely heat-proof.

Have you seen this done anywhere else?? I can only see a few pics online. Will it look naff with that surround?! I don't have long to think about it as the woodburner people are booked in on 24th nov so I need to decide quickly in order to get the tiles and do the tiling! I'm hoping for lots of ideas or advice....thank you!
I have also put this on the home decorating board.

Hmm, I don't know. I associate those types of tiled surrounds with Victorian style fires, rather than a modern-ish wood burner.
also would the tiles be flat inside the alcove? So you know tiled surrounds are usually sort of angled in towards the fire, do you mean actually tiling the inside of the alcove instead?

LittleMiss77 · 03/11/2015 16:37

I just kept it simple as the focus is the burner iyswim?

I dont think id know what to look at if there were tiles inside the alcove - i think it might look a bit busy?

Yes, I know what you mean re the Victorian tiles being in 2 columns and at an angle. I am thinking of tiling the whole of the little alcove that the burner sits in.... I think it could look fab, but without a lot of time to think about it, order tile samples etc, I can't fully envisage it.

littlemiss77 yes! I guess the focus should be the actual fire!

Plain brickshaped tiles? in a dusty green? make sure they are heat resistant otherwise they will need to be a significant distance from the fire.

Lovely fire!!

I think if you are having that surround you'll need some colour in there to break it up.

DP fitted a log burner, black, with dusty pink tiles for a client, i was Hmm but it actually looked amazing.

How about the hearth? what size is it, it has to be at least 300mm from the front of the burner and the burner needs to be 150mm away from the tiles (iirc) - i can't see how that surround will work with a log burner. Where will it sit?

It might be worth checking with the woodburner people whether tiles are even an option, or whether they have to be specific ones.

The only reason I say that is we looked into getting a woodburner recently and there are all sorts of regulations that I'm sure probably never existed a few years ago (although that may have been just for the location of where we wanted one, in the corner of a room rather than in a fireplace IYSWIM)

TheoriginalLEM · 03/11/2015 18:36

oh, the burner will be black? go for the pink ones then :)

WindUpBird · 03/11/2015 18:37

TheoriginalLEM that fire surround comes without the extra panelling (slip stones??) for wood burners, so there will be a big gap around the burner. And the hearth will come out by 300mm. That's a good idea to go for brick-shape tiles. I'll have a look to see if any colours inspire me
Norbert yes! the woodburner people said tiles were an option.

Tiles will be fine, so long as they are heat resistant (most are) and heat resistant adhesive is used. Yes, they are PAGES of regulations Hmm Says the poor thing who has to read up on them whenver DP fits one of the bloody things.

Make sure that whoever fits the burner is HETAS registered or registers the burner with your local building control.

NorbertDentressangle · 03/11/2015 18:39

That's OK then - it would have been a pain for you if you decided to have tiles and then were told that it's not allowed due to legislation.

TheoriginalLEM · 03/11/2015 18:41

very similar to these - they looked fantastic - although there was no fire surround, just an oak mantle shelf.

This is kind of what I'm thinking of:

Those pink ones look good, I'm going to have a look for other colours in that pattern.

TheoriginalLEM · 03/11/2015 18:52

oooh, i love those!!! but not on the hearth - they are busy but i think if you have plain walls then they are great. What colour are your wallks?

I love tiles :)

howtorebuild · 03/11/2015 18:54

I would go for the thirties style tiles as suggested.

WindUpBird · 03/11/2015 19:18

Yes, I would stick to the black slate hearth. Walls will be plain, a greyish white, I suspect!

Oh, I like those OP. Very nice. I love tiles.

WindUpBird · 03/11/2015 20:27

Thanks for the votes of confidence, theoriginalLEM and Swedish Edith!

All ceramic tiles are heat proof

Suggest stick with cement, not tile adhesive

Get chimney liner installed that connects to wood burner fitted by Hetas enginner

Enjoy cosy fire

RaphaellaTheSpanishWaterDog · 03/11/2015 21:41

Love those patterned tiles, OP......think they would look fab with your proposed woodburner - much more interesting than plain tiles/painted insert Grin

WindUpBird · 04/11/2015 13:19

Thanks very much everyone! I'm going for some patterned tiles similar to the ones I posted above!
