New window, new bathroom but which first?

I'm totally clueless so any advice would be very much appreciated.

We have a freezing, damp crappy bathroom with an ancient metal-framed window that needs replacing. It's an odd size so we will need a smaller one, meaning that some building work will be necessary. Do window companies (Everest etc) do that, or will I need to buy a window and get a builder to put it in?

Am I right to think that we should sort the window out first, and then install the new bathroom?

look up windows in your area, there are independent fitters out there that are a thousand times better and (usually) ££ cheaper than.

Window first. Get a few quotes from local independents. You'll be surprised at the variety in prices.

And they would install it including the building work?

Our local window people make them a bespoke size to fit the gap. They also make the timber frames to set them in so could adapt the size in this way too if you wanted.

Lots of windows are an odd size so it shouldn't phase a half decent window company.

I don't understand why you need a smaller window than is presently there. Is it to fit a specific piece of bathroom furniture in? I think it would look odd if you have to in-fill any gaps.

Agree that you should get the window fitted first.

Is the metal framed one a feature? (i am imagining a crittal window). In that case I would refurbish instead.

It looks like a window from a 1960s institutional building! Friend who is a builder reckons they found it on a skip and just stuck some wood underneath to fit the hole. Definitely not a feature!

We are about to have our bathroom done and the people doing it are also replacing the yukky window that is there and knocking down a wall between the shower room/bathroom. It depends on who is going to do the bathroom as there may be an economy of scale by using the same people.

It didn't occur to me that the same company would install the bathroom and do the window. Really am clueless! What do I google????

You'll just need a builder, they can do the plumbing, plastering and and fitting of everything.

If it's a cost thing then definitely window first, windows are made to measure a builder will measure and order for you then fit in and plaster.

Yes we are using a general building company and they will appoint the plumber/electrician/plasterer/tiler as and when they need them and it saves me having to work out what order things are being done in. Also the builder passed on his trade discount at Ridgeons to me which has meant a great saving on the fittings and sanitaryware.
