Moving a bathroom

We live in a 2 bed mid terrace. Have one DD and a ds on the way so eventually we need an extra bedroom. Can't go into the loft as pitch is too low - can't even stand up in it. Our only option (other than moving which we aren't in a position to do currently) is to move our bathroom from the rear to the front of the house. Front bedroom has a large alcove which would fit a small bathroom (not big enough for a bedroom though). freeing up current bathroom would create an extra bedroom.

Anyone done this? Is it an astronomically costly thing to do?

Is there any plumbing or drainage in the space you want to move the bathroom to?

Fleurchamp · 01/11/2015 19:25

We have done this. The cost for moving our drainage (we wanted a properly plumbed loo and not a macerator), putting up the stud work, installing a lintel, installing the bathroom and making good the old bathroom and turning it into a bedroom was around £14k this included sorting out building regs (which you may need if moving drainage/ knocking out any supporting walls) and all electrical work, decorating etc.

The bathroom suite etc. was extra.

We're in London though and are usually thoroughly ripped off as a result Hmm

Where is your staircase?

You can do anything (more or less) if you can pay for it.

Moving plumbing and drainage, waterproofing, and ensuring ventilation is all expensive work, if you can get requisite approvals.

Would anyone wanting to use a toilet (guest or inhabitant) need to walk through your bedroom to get to it?

A DD and a DS can share a room for a good few years. Will your circumstances change enough by then to enable a move?

Staircase comes up from under the alcove where I'm thinking of putting the bathroom. At the top of the stairs we literally have a square of landing - bathroom to the left, dd's room straight ahead, main bedroom to the right

I know it's been done to a house down the road, but only found out via rightmove, and the previous owners who did it have since moved so I can't just pop down the road and ask them for details!

We're doing this - turning the end of our bedroom into a bathroom, and our bathroom into a bedroom.

We are helped that it's exactly what was done to a load of the same property (ours is ex-council), so we've asked our neighbour for a gander. All we need to do is put in new soil pipe (to existing sewer running straight outside), and a stud wall with a couple of doorways though, as there's already a window in the right place.

I had quotes to re-jig the old bathroom (including moving a soil pipe) and that was 3k - I'm getting quotes this week for a completely new one.

Approval doesn't seem to be a big deal - we meet all the regs already (ventilation, floor strength), it's just the soil pipe that'll need extra approval, plus possibly a site visit to see that we're not doing anything crazy. I'm doing full plans with all the calculations though, so we can get a kind of pre-auth on it.

Yes ChunkyPickle this is exactly what we want to do!!! Ours is also ex council, in the ones that are still council the bathrooms are downstairs with 3 beds upstairs. Please let me know how you get on!
