Storage heater

Who should I call to look at night storage heaters? I tried google to no avail. We've rented our house for two years and the one in the spare room has never worked. It wasn't a problem but we are going to try for a baby and there's no way I would use that room as it is. Our landlord is fairly useless so it would be easier to get a quote and then just let him know. Would it be an electrician or a special storage heater chap?

Very often they stop working because people put towels or clothes on them. This prevents the heat getting out so the overheat link melts.

...and if the previous tenant did this, and never mentioned it, and you never mentioned it, it will never get fixed because the landlord doesn't know.

changing the link should not be an expensive job. Is it wired right? Are you on a correct tariff?

We did mention it over a year ago and nothing was done. If we send him a quote he's more likely to do something.

I don't think you'll get a firm quote unless someone takes it apart to verify what has gone wrong, which is as much effort as repairing it.

There might be some other, less common fault.

We had a friend look at it unofficially and he reckons it's so old there'll be no parts for it so a whole new one will probably be needed

speak to the council for advice on this one (Even though you aren't in a council property). See if they think it is serious enough to force him into action.

I detest landlords like this. It won't cost him that much, and even if it did, no excuse.

To be honest I think if we got someone in he would make no fuss about paying the bill. He's not deliberately wiggling out of the responsibility. We need to be more firm.
